So I'm sure all of you have been through this many times so by now you should be pros! Anyways, still struggling with the engine swap but just about there. I had the dist. off to change the intake manifold and yes now I can't get it properly timed. I know I need a scanner to set it correctly. I'm also getting the P1345 code. My question is this...could it be off enough to make it run very poorly?? It has a rough start but will stay started. It revs up but it seems like its struggling/misfiring. If I put it in drive and go, it will just bog out and die. I've tried turning the dist. while it's running to see where it runs the smoothest but every position seems almost the same if not better. Also, what is meant by "off by a tooth" doesn't the dist. only go in 180° each way? Could a worn dist. gear cause this or a bad cam sensor?

if you didn't have the #1 cylinder at top dead center(TDC) when you put the distributor in then u "skipped a tooth",which could cause it to run like a real bag of shit.most commonly it is a simple/little screw up so just try it again

^+1^

I recently replaced my dizzy and its important to put cyl #1 at TDC then aim the dzzy at cyl 1 then fine tune the timing after.

Like said..cyclinder 1 at TDC and then have the rotor pointed at that cylinder.

Sounds like you have that taken care of though. Wher are you located, I'd be able to help with a scan tool if you are nearby.

Brother went through the same thing on his '99 after we took care of an intake gasket leak. Timing was only off a couple of degrees but caused same symptomns your 'Hoe experiencing.

Lol I'm in Canada I don't think you'd want to come down here! haha thanks for the offer though.

But yeah I had it at TDC when I put the distributor in so I'm guessing I will just need to take it to a shop to get them to time it properly. The thing is though I can barely get it running enough to drive there. If my it's 180° out will it still run?? And I still got get the meaning of "off by a tooth." Is this the dist. drive gear to the cam gear?? But the dist. only goes in either 180° each way correct? Should I put it at TDC then move it just a bit forward to skip the next tooth or something??

Please help and Merry Christmas!!

You should be able to have a mechanic come out with a scan tool. Doesn't take much than, 10-15 minutes to do.

I don't believe it would run if the dizzy was 180 off.

This video shows you exactly what we are talking about with being off one tooth.

Your truck will NOT start if you are 180 off and you will know you are on if you put cyl 1 at TDC then just aim the rotor at cyl 1. Make sure its on the compression stroke by feeling with your hand, or a compression tester.

This should get you close enough to adjust the dizzy by advancing and retarding the timing yourself while its running to make it run as smooth as possible until you can get it scanned.

If you are off by a tooth or two this video should help illustrate how to turn the oil pump so you can move the dizzy tooth by tooth instead of only 180 degrees.

Good luck!

How did that go?

Oh ya, when he came with the scan tool, ask him to check the retard reading.
On mine that's the same as timing. Mine's supposed to +-2degrees. After I got my engine swap done, it was +14degrees. I had a friend manually turn the dis while I revved it to at least 1200rpms and read out the number from the scan tool. I got mine in at 0degrees, then we locked down the dis.

Hope you got yours working!
