Painted my grill surround

Been wanting to do this for a while, so after alot of research on the forums I did it. Now there is no more chrome on my Tahoe!!

I knew it was gonna be hard to make the paint stick to the chrome. I had read on another forum that you can have the chrome stripped by a chrome shop. My chrome guy had never tried it before, but I got him to do it and it worked. The only thing that didn;t get stripped was the copper that is put on in order for the chrome to stick (2nd pic). That was taken off with some sanding (3rd pic). Then it was sprayed with a adhesion promoter and top coated with Krylon for plastic(pic 4) I did not clear it. I think that if I do get a chip it would be easier just to mask off the spot and re touch it. I followed another tread to get the grill off. usually 20 dollar cover fee depending on what club you go, tipping the girls are optional......oh wait, you meant related to the grill.

Stripping cost me $40 I thought it was a little high, but I needed to know if it would work.

I just scuffed the heck outta the back and front bow ties. The back one won;t get the rocks and stuff flying at it, so I didn't give it as much attention to the chrome in that.

$40 isn't bad considering. No matter what material was used to strip it off; i feel thats a fair price. Should hold up quite well. Still would do a clear coat though. Can still repair dings just have to scuff the clear a little around that area.

I did this on my bmw x5 a couple years back. The same pieces, except as Im sure you can picture on almost every bmw, the two kidney shaped grilles right next to eachother...

I just flat black krylond right over the chrome. I saw the car a few weeks ago (local buyer), and it still has not cracked, peeled, or chipped. I specifically looked for it, assuming it would have by now!

I did the one on my Silverado and it chipped in no time. The other reason I didn't clear it is because I wanted a Matte finish and I couldn't fine a matte clear in a paint can. I would of have to take it to a body shop and didn;t want to do that.

Not sure about the chemical stripper. It would have to be good stuff. That chrome is really on there.
