I was taking the flares and door moldings off today and found that at the rear near the bumper there are some panels attached to the body that are held up by what looks like rivets. Anyone know how to take these off without leaving holes??

Those (if they are hard plastic) are pretty easy to take out, and hold up the plastic inner fender pieces. To remove them, take a small flat head and pop the center out. Then take a bigger flat head to the whole thing and it will come out.

I just figured out I cannot remove these. When removing the lower rocker panel, it is not a smooth look. You can see the bracket to the step bar and everything. I would have to figure a way to modify it and put on different running boards.

Ok now I see, what you describe looks like the rivets that hold on the z71 specific molding brackets. I've personally never taken one apart, it "appears" that those are indeed rivets that will need to be drilled out.

On the side steps, again I've never done one but it appears that you will have to remove the step and then the gray piece. Then reinstall the step if you want to keep it?

IF you end up drilling out the rivets, remember always start with a really small bit and work your way up. The holes are not nearly as big as they appear, I did this to remove my glove box from the dash in November.

I can take the gray piece off of the truck without taking the steps off. The problem is what it looks like if I take the gray piece off. There is an ugly looking bracket underneath. I'll take it off and provide pics tomorrow. For now im off to the beach

So thats wats under that ugly grey plastic, ugly brackets, figures. I thot about takin em off but knew i was too obsessive about marks left behind. Wonder if the non-z71 running boards would cover up that bracket beneath the plastic, ive always liked those ones a little better and those ebay ones look like the oem ones.

Run on sentence.

Well Mass Hoe here is what the whole thing looks like. I was right about there being a whole bracket riveted into the frame right under the door. Pic is below! So that is the question now. What running boards will work with this? Has anyone done the same thing before?

I know that I will have to take this bracket off to put a non z71 like running board on, so I want to make sure I have the right part before I take the old bracket off!
