iPad in center console?

What do you guys think - let's say I take out my Denali woodgrain center cupholder section and fit an Apple iPad in there? I could buy one of those PXAMG devices and have it constantly hooked up, and then I'd have a media center for my Tahoe right there. It would be easy to flip through songs and use the internet if I'm waiting somewhere. And if I got tired of it, just remove it and put the console back.

Good idea? Bad idea? Suggestions? Your thoughts help! :Handshake:

I'd probably cover it up with something. But then again it's a dark object in a black interior on a truck with tinted windows so it won't be a really obvious thing unless someone knew about it being there.

Do it! Go check out some youtube vids on it. There's some sick work people have done integrating an iPad into the dash. There's one series of videos that goes through the complete installation/fabrication.

I like the idea of it...and after seeing the "Fishedition" I kinda want to hook up an Apple TV (small media console) to the rear entertainment system, so the iPad would be able to stream any video or music to it without needing a DVD.

Only thing I would worry about is locking it into one orientation (portrait/landscape). It'd be sweet if you had it mounted so it looked flush but you could actually pull it out and use it or remove it if you wanted too.

I don't know where you live but you might need to look at the safe temps for the iPad too. I know the safe operating temp is only like 95, but I don't know the temp at which you'll just fry it. I know my rig will get really stinking hot, and it's white.

Just a couple things to think about...

Thanks for the temp advice - definitely something that shouldn't be overlooked. And as far as the orientation goes, if it currently doesn't have Orientation Lock like my iPhone 4 does, then it should be getting it in the next software update. And it will lock into portrait which is what I'll need for the place I'm mounting it.

iPad is 7.47" wide by 9.56" long...so I need to measure my center cupholder section and see if it really will fit.

I might consider a smaller one, though I like how the current size is nearly identical to the center cupholder for a clean install.

No matter the size, I'm still holding out for the one with the integrated camera.

Smaller one is supposed to have the camera...

Just do some fiberglass work. If you don't know how to do it, it's a good place to start

Lol well I don't want to mount my phone in the dash...I also have an iPod touch but it's slow. I really want the iPad to do this.

I doubt Apple will exclude the bigger one from getting the camera unless they discontinue that model. But even if they do exclude it, I still like that size a lot. I won't use it for just the truck, I'll also use it as a computer for when I'm at my dad's and when I'm flying.

Thanks for the link! I just ordered a new 32GB 3G iPad so I can't wait to see what all I can do with it.

should be cool... i did the basic job with the Iphone using the Dice electronics gradle and the composite video cable hooked up to my GMX322. Works good but not as cool as a Ipad!

Haha. Well I was going to hold out on one but I figured I don't really care about the camera for FaceTime since I have an iPhone 4. But I did have a PXAMG with iPod hookup installed before it stopped working, I may have to order another for the iPad.
