hey fam,
i have a 97 tahoe and i stored it for 3 years. and i just re-tagged it to drive this winter. i drove it home and parked it (10min) came back out and it started fine but would not shift from park at all. i kept pressing the break sometimes realy hard.. and it still did not shift,, after minutes it finally released and i moved it and reparked it. i have tried it several times later and no pravail...i heard it could be the shift interlock actuator/solenoid. my question is does anyone agree and can anyone tell me where it is, how to get to it, and can i overide it to get it to the shop.

thank youall

Mine does it to, if I slam the driver door harder it will release and allow me to shift. Only happens in really hot weather though.

One strange hoe.

unknown at this time.
It is you interlock or the circuit that feeds it. it is on the steering column and has a rod attached to it you can bypass it by slightly turning key from lock enough to unlock steering wheel as well, shift into nuetral start engine on nuetral and be on your way. When power is turned on it locks in place they only way it will unlock at that point is to cut power is by depressing brake pedal. So you see you could have a problem in the brake switch as well.

i have this problem in my 96 from time to time, check and see if you are getting lights on your breaks, if not, you have my problem. which can be fixed by getting a new brake light switch, it sits above the pole on your brake petal. if you can reach up there and puch it in and down, it might allow you to temporarily get out of park and go where you need to go.

A absolute last resort to just get it to the shop, you could start the truck on park have someone hold the brake very hard and go under the truck dissconnect the linkage and pull it toward the rear of the truck 3 clicks and it will be in drive. The linkage is very easy to disconnect it will only take a flat head screwdriver to pry the linkage off the trans. I have to do this often to tow vehicles.

Hello,
YES! I have the same problem with my 99 yukon. It sounds like the shift interlock soleniod/actuator. It us under your steering column. It is black with a metal rod and mine had green wires plugged into it. I removed that wire/unplugged it and voila it works now. ALTHOUGH now I can take it out of park without applying the brake BUT I didn't have to go to dealer to get charged out the wahzoo for it. I did end up replacing it but it drove fine until then. I use a test light on the wiring and it had a constant flow, so I'm assuming the switch somehow grounded it and allowed it to move from park.. hope this helped :)

One thing you can do that is far easier (and safer) is turning the key to the first detent ( where the shift led lights up but the truck isn't "on") then the trans will pull out of park without depressing the brake. Worked on my parents 98 Sub for a couple of months before we could fix it.
