Yeah, I used one of these and some oil-resistant thread locker on the two screws for the pickup tube & girdle.

Here's a good video showing that bearing clearance changes with temperature especially with aluminum blocks. They talk about it at 17:45.

Today I installed new dual rear brake hose setup Genuine GM# 176-1525 - $63 amazon. Gravity blead the brakes afterwards.

Maybe your torque converter wasn't locking up, or you were in 5th gear not sixth.
