I have a 21 Tahoe and the “D” on the Electronic Transmission Shift Control Pushbutton has pretty much disintegrated and you have to mess with it for 10-15 minutes to get it in drive. After a lengthy search I found the part but can’t find a dealership that will tell me they can install it. Most tell me they have never done that before and will have to get back to me - never do. Or they say it takes all kinds of programming to install and don’t want to do it. Has anyone had this issue ? Any advice on where to get this installed? Seems fairly easy if you know how to disassemble the dash. Any advice appreciated.

One could argue that this should be covered under the powertrain warranty...so if you are less than 60K miles..I feel like they owe you it..if you can't get it to shift gears...kind of owe you.

it's a mechanical switch, there "should" be no programming involved, but I could be wrong
***EDIT APPEARS IT DOES NEED TO BE PROGRAMMED AS NOTED BELOW
in this video he is replacing the cluster but it gives you a idea of how to remove the trim pieces to get access to the screws for the switch, it should be plug-n-play.
in the worse case scenario you replace the switch yourself and if it does not go into drive then have it towed and programmed.
I am pretty sure that will not be the case though.
**be sure to disconnect the battery before you unplug or re-plug in the replacement switch. just to be on the safe side.

I don’t understand what the point is in calling all over town to ask the phone jockeys at dealerships whether or not they’ve done a repair? What difference does that make whether they have or not? And why would the people who answer the phones to setup appointments and filter phone calls telling you anything help you? They don’t have a clue. All they do is answer phones and a lot of dealers outsource that to a third party company. I know that sounds mean or whatever but I’m genuinely curious why people do this?

The switch is “easy” to install and does have to be programmed if that helps you any.

wierd that the switch needs programming, on another note a extended family member had a 21 that they ended up lemon lawing but while that was in the process of happening we had it at a lake and it was parked on the boat ramp waiting for our turn, had it turned off, in park, parking brake set. we got out and were just standing around yacking while waiting and all of a sudden out of the blue the thing decided to just lurch forward a few inches, that was pretty scary considering it was aimed right at the lake. I personally wont ever buy one.....

so when gm decides to stop making these in 5 years your out of luck? doesn't sound right and it would severely decrease the resale value and make them valueless to dismantlers

Correct. You may buy another new $100k vehicle and you’ll like it.
Next thing ya know, GM's parts will have more and more in common with John Deere ...
