Hey all,
I am reviving this in hopes that it helps anyone else along the way. My wife and I have a ‘22 Z71 Tahoe and almost from the beginning of us owning the car, the front USB ports (above the wireless charging pad) and the USB ports inside the center console were intermittent. At some point they stopped all together and the quick solution was to use the USB-C ports on the back of the center console.
While the vehicle was under warranty, I had them look into getting it fixed, they replaced the front USB module but that did not fix the issue. This was probably a year ago. Fast forward to a few weeks back, my dad and I decided to look into it ourselves (also knowing that they have an almost identical spec ‘23 Tahoe) as we could leverage swapping parts/checking voltages across both cars to pinpoint the issue. After swapping modules, checking fuses, etc. this is what we found.
In my ‘22, the front USB ports and the ones inside the center console operate on both the same fuse circuit for power (can’t remember the exact fuse number at the moment) and also they are daisy-chained for the USB data as well. After removing the trim panels in the passenger foot well, we found that the USB connection that runs to the charger is actually a long extension. So we removed the front USB port module and brought it over to the foot well and bypassed the entire extension (had to power it separately)….voila it started charging!
So now the dilemma, go back to the dealership and tell them you know the problem and ask them to order the console harness (found online for ~$110) or buy an $8 USB-Mini extension and fix it ourselves. Because of my wife needing the car, I opted for the $8 cable option (maybe I’ll buy the GM harness later) and tonight after a quick 5 minute job, all the charge ports are operational again.
I grabbed just a few pictures, the blue circles indicate where the existing harness needs to be unplugged. This is behind the plastic trim cover in the passenger foot well, no special tools for this it is all on clips. Unplug the blue connection and once you have routed the cable from up above, you plug into the new extension (green square) from the GM harness and bypass their USB extension.
This is what fixed our Tahoe and i know how frustrating it is to not have the ports working, I really hope this helps in some way to others who have been facing the same issue. I know that i searched around and saw no solution online being that the vehicles are still relatively new.
TL;DR $8 USB extension is the culprit for the front two sets of usb ports not working. 5 min job fixes everything.
Thanks, Jesse
