Looks like a mass recall in the works for the 10 speed 2020-2022 Duramax models. (461K units) The 10 speed for duramax is slightly different from gas models as they’re not affected appearantly.

Transmission Control valve.

Part of that recall is the 10 speed behind the 6.6l Duramax also.

The question is how urgent is this repair? has it been happening with regularity on these vehicles?? I've never heard of it happening. Might take a look at it at the next time it has to go in. But not really too excited about it at the moment... 33k and no issues....

Fingers crossed recall won't be expanded to include 2023/24 3.0s.

Curious, what's special about the 10 speed in the diesels? Is it not the same 10L80 that the gas trucks use?

This is only a software update - it allows the TCM to monitor the valve body wear and before it becomes an issue that will cause a wheel lock up, it will display a "service transmission soon" message.

The question I have is - is there a new "better" valve body that doesn't wear like these ones do in the affected vehicles? Not sure if my '22 has that new valve body or if it just has the software with capabilities to detect the wear as this recall is going to add to the '21 SUVs.

If that's the case would a new valve be covered out of warranty if it causes this issue at say 50-75K miles? Covered by powertrain warranty?

The last statement seems to indicate that they will cover replacement of the valve body - usually these are handled as an "extended warranty" on that particular component. I know on my 2017 Honda Accord the DRLs fail at such a high rate that Honda sent me a letter a few years back saying they extended the warranty on the DRL to 10 years - unlimited mileage.

Dealers will install new transmission control module software free of charge. This module will monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lock-up condition could occur. If detected, the transmission will shift gears to prevent lock up and a service engine light and reduced propulsion message will display.

GM will also provide a special program to cover the repair of transmissions that the software identifies as having a defective control valve.

Apparently the 2023/2024 vehicles are not included in recall because these are already programmed with the software fix. Should also apply to Tahoe/Yukons.

Taken from last page of NHTSA report.

"All 2022 model year Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 vehicles produced after March 21, 2022 and Silverado 2500/3500 and Sierra 2500/3500 produced after January 11, 2022 were built with new transmission control software that detects excessive wear. The new transmission control software was implemented for all other affected models at the start of the 2022 model year production."
