6.2 valve spring replacement sign of things to come?

Looking at a 2015 Denali XL 4x4 with the 6.2 and a 6-speed transmission (build date of 9/14 so from what I have read 6-speed is correct). Has 161K on it and with a every service record. Question about the 6.2. At 160K the CarFax states "engine valve spring(s) replaced" and then 1,000 miles later they traded it in. They owned it for roughly 100K miles. I am planning on calling the shop on Monday that did the valve springs and seeing if I can find anything else out. (i.e., did they replace all or just one)

My question to anyone with more knowledge about these engines than me: Is it worth calling the shop or should I just keep looking?

I have read so much about the valve springs and lifters (and don't know enough about engines) that I'm confused if it's good they had the valve springs replaced (if they had all replaced) or if it's a sign of things to come.

Also, from what I have read the 6-speed seems to be a reliable transmission. At 118k they took it to a GM dealer and had the "transmission serviced" so I'm going to call them and see if they can/will tell me what that means. That's they only transmission related service shown so it will need a transmission fluid exchange (flush not recommended from what I have read, not even BG?)

I'm not sure that you will get much out of the repair shop, assuming that they specifically remember working on that truck. Yes, the valve spring replacement was caused by something, but that does not necessarily mean that you should move on to looking at other trucks. If you have a local repair shop that you trust, you could have the mechanic check the truck out.

Regarding the 6 speed transmission, I believe that the fluid change recommendation is around 100k miles, but I could be wrong. Typically, these transmissions are good for 150k+ miles, before they need a rebuild or replacement.

I’ve had two valve springs fail in a 6.2. One in my 2007 at about 140,000 and the next one on my 2013 at 180,000.

My guess is they had a single spring fail and they just had all of them replaced as a precaution. I would not spend a lot of time pondering that particular detail.

The repair shop should be able to tell you how many springs were replaced and hopefully why. Without buying it and testing things yourself you stuck depending on peoples honesty. Are you mechanically inclined? You can also scan the engine and see of old codes are still stored. look for bolts that have been marred on the edges all around the engine and see if alot was taken apart. Valve springs as a set is easier done with the heads removed, which often leads to cleaning the heads, decking the heads, laping the valves, replacing the valve seals, new head gaskets and generally refreshing the heads. that could be a very good thing if thats what happened.

If they waited until 118k for a vital components 1 and only service, what else was neglected? I tend to stay away from these sort of owners unless I can get a deal that takes the risk into the equation
