Does the part number have to match?

Hello all,

For YEARS I have been dealing with a constant issue of the 4x4 dial light going out and losing 4wd.... After spending THOUSANDS on new actuators, encoders, pulling and re-seating ground wires, tracing wires, new battery cables, new dials, etc. etc., only to have it come on for a few days and then stop working...I have determined that my TCCM is bad...It is literally the last component to replace as I have metered every single wire going into and out of it... It gets power but just works sometimes...

The question, 24237151 is the part number on the TCCM... I have yet to find this number in any search on the internet to have replaced... I have seen multiples of every other number and they look identical. Is this something that has to match EXACTLY or can another be programmed and installed? This TCCM loss of comms issue is causing all sorts of other issues like no more remote start, the variable timing will now work, etc. because the check engine light is on.

It would be helpful to know some vehicle details -- year, make, model, engine, etc. Consider putting it in your signature so it's always there.

Some of us are curious about what specific code(s) are being set when the 4wd doesn't work. How's the ground on the TCCM?

Suggest going to www.gmpartsdirect.com, enter your VIN, and see if the newest part number is available there for your VIN; part numbers are constantly being updated and old ones superseded. Once you have the updated part number you can search the internet for a part and availability.

Rock Auto is also a good source for parts. Looks like a new one would require programming.

Codes U0101 and U0102. The TCM itself is new and programmed...wasn't the problem. Pulled every ground and did them back up. this took me a long time over the last 2 years. Some I replaced just to make sure. Checked every wire with schematics going in and out of the TCCM, all passed or metered fine. Voltage is there. Replaced encoder, had transfer case rebuilt (they said that's the reason...wasted $1500), replaced the actuator motor, replaced the battery cables, replaced the selector switch for 4WD...Pretty much everything but the TCCM. On some random days...and I mean every couple months... everything suddenly works...and it works for a few days and then no more. Which always put me back to checking grounds and wiring....over and over and over... At this point it has to be the TCCM itself but now with this part number I cannot seem to find anywhere....I am stuck trying to figure out how to replace this. The codes above are the same ones today as I had when this all started like 5yrs ago when the service 4wd errors would happen like every couple days and then be fine....then the periods between it working or not got longer and longer.

Would like to add, when it suddenly works and I see the little amber indicator light on the dial (it's usually off unless everything is working), it cycles through the modes and everything works perfectly fine..as it should since I have almost all new parts for the system. So, I know mechanically and electronically it works so long as this TCCM is functioning properly.

However, this last round of it working had a different thing. The selector dial wouldn't light up or "boot up" when you turned key on or started vehicle.... It would when I put it in reverse or drive...which put me right back under the vehicle looking for bad wiring...which I didn't find any.

Look at post to #4 and #6. @Fless helped you out. It looks like the old part had been superseded. I always go to a dealer website and enter my VIN for the latest part numbers. Sometimes they change over the years and trying to get the part number off the old one isn’t the best way to go. You end up with outdated part numbers. But…if you don’t believe that and really want to spend the money, I found a refurbished one with your exact part number for $895;
