Rear seating has poor design for legs

I believe the 2021 gives a lot more leg room for the 3rd row because the switch to an independent suspension allows the deck to be lower.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

There is a trick out there that involves a piece of threaded pipe with an elbow. Screw it in, give it a wack, and it's out. I didn't have any piper at home.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Thanks Wade, I saw that and had been trying to use my picks. Surprisingly, the pick left a slight indentation on the aluminum so I held back on that. Later I got a small screwdriver and wedged it in the indentation I had made and tapped towards the center and got it.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

I may be stumped by the silliest problem, the transmission filter seal. I've done filter changes on my 99 Lesabre, and never had a problem getting the seal out. This one, I'm stuck. Ideas? EDIT: No sooner do I ask for help, it comes.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Thanks Steve, That's actually one of the reasons I felt that my transfer case may have been recently rebuilt. The fluid was still nice and blue. Anyway, I've got AutoTrak II ready to go.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Lifting the transfer case into place was the worst part of this job so far. I actually don't mind doing the transmission. It has fewer connections and its weight is predicable (as long as you consider the jack you are using). If I were used to heavy weights, this would have been fine, but on...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Oh, I need to ask this. At the time I was installing the rear main seal itself, I couldn't find my volume 2 of my FSM, so I relied on the seal instructions from FelPro. The FelPro instructions said to lubricate the OUTSIDE diameter of the seal, but said nothing about the INSIDE diameter...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Rear main and cover, and flexplate is installed. Now onto reinstalling the transmission. Here are a few things to took up an unnecessary amount of my time. If this is your first time doing this, this may help you: Draining transmission: If you are unwilling to bend the bracket, wait until...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

After removal of the rear cover, I could tell that the gasket material on the metal frame was completely flat and flush with the metal. There was oil in ALL the bolt holes for the rear cover. Given how badly this was leaking, I don't see how I could make the leak worse by almost any mistake...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Here's a picture of my rear cover. There's quite a bit of fresh oil on the cover itself, some around the bolts, some around the seal itself. Interestingly, I see some oil on the threads of the two long pan bolts. I'll pay attention to whether the oil is coming from the bolt hole, or if the...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Got to the rear main seal. For those of you who are considering removing the transmission for the first time, here's a tip. With the transmission supported, remove the front crossmember that goes underneath the engine oil pan. Then you can tip the transmission just a little lower. This...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

In principle, I like to keep things in as original shape as possible. My thinking is probably flawed on this one, but I don't like the idea to bend the bracket. Because many seem to have done it, I assume it has no effect on shifting, although I presume the shifter cable has to be adjusted...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Lowering the transfer case with a transmission jack is very doable, but I will consider putting something grippy like a mouse pad on the deck of the jack to keep the TC from sliding around. That was the biggest problem I had. Now, onto the transmission. It took a good 1/2 hour to remove two...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Note to self: don't mess with Wade. He bench presses transfer cases.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

The bolt I did manage to remove wasn't rusted. It wouldn't be that hard to remove if it were a regular hex bolt, or even a larger torx head. And even a little more room to get just a couple more inches of leverage would have helped.

    Rear Main Oil Seal

I'm sure this would be possible. However, I'd have to allow the TC to twist around as it lowers because the output shaft end rests on the torsion bar cross member. I have thought of making a wooden cradle just to keep the TC from sliding off the deck of the transmission jack. Steve tells me...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Alright, most sane people wouldn't do this job without a lift. I don't have a choice. Well, I do, and the other option is to pay probably 2 grand to have the job done. Sorry, not for an 18 year old truck. I'm about to drop the transfer case. All 6 nuts are removed from the transfer case to...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Today's 4 hours so far have been slow, but good. That's pretty normal for me. I've got all the electrical connectors off from the transfer case and the entire wire loom pushed aside. Vent hose is disconnected, and everything supported at the transmission on jack stands (with wood between the...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

First 4 hours: got transmission pan unbolted. You either have to remove the exhaust Y pipe completely, or remove the transmission selector cable bracket. They prevent removal of the pan. You'd think the cable bracket, which is held on by T-40 bolts, should be easy to remove. They're in a...

    Rear Main Oil Seal

Garage cleared, Tahoe parked, getting ready for rear main. I've got a checklist plan which I will update with bolt sizes, possibly tools. I do this so I don't forget something critical, but I'll post it in the end for the benefit of other newbie's. Sorry, no video, hooking up a video cam will...

    Mildew smell under liftgate

Mildew smell is still there, more evident when opening the lift gate glass. I've removed the gasket to clean the gasket area as best I can, and I've sprayed AC cleaner through the holes of the gasket. I removed the plastic trim from the door and wiped down the metallic surfaces. I cleaned the...

    Rear main seal: transfer case

!@#$^% search engine.... Cannot find my thread from just a few months ago.... Rant over. A lot of guys seem to miss one of the connectors on the transfer case when removing it. As for electrical connectors, these seem to cause the most grief. There are other things about doing a rear main...

    Fob key Tahoe 2002

I know my FOB will unlock the rear hatch and liftgate, but will not release the latch to pop it open. I'm happy with that. Our Explorer will pop open, and we've found our rear hatch open in the mornings once in awhile. We threw something on top of the keys which popped open the hatch.

    Steering gear box leak

You do know you have both inner and outer tie rod ends, right? So you will want 4 tie rod ends total. If you can rotate the center link easily by hand, the inner tie rod ends definitely need replacement, but for the cost, and needing an alignment, I'd do all 4 tie rod ends anyway.
