    Looking for a 4th Gen 4Runner

My wife has been happy with a 2008 Explorer. The only issues we've had is that these eat wheel bearing for breakfast, but the front ones are easy to change. It is just a thought for alternatives to the 4Runner.

2003 Tahoe Steering Wheel Upside Down after Steering Gearbox Replaced

I came across this info. I know it is for a Jeep, but similar precautions will apply: https://forums.4wdmechanix.com/topic/222-installing-a-pitman-arm-correctly/

2003 Tahoe Steering Wheel Upside Down after Steering Gearbox Replaced

When I look at the splines of a steering box, there are four "key" positions. This means that the Pitman arm could go on in any one of four positions. There are 8 teeth between each key position. I think the Pitman arm is installed 180° out. There may have been a manufacturing defect on...

    96 Tahoe Random Misfire P0300

I'm curious, what was cold cranking like? Did it improve after changing the FPR? Often a leaking FPR will cause extended cold cranking because the pressure has bled down, and intake air is saturated with fuel vapour as the fuel escaped through the vacuum line. (A quick check of this is to pull...

    96 Tahoe Random Misfire P0300

I have never had an issue with hgh octane fuel. I suspect something different, perhaps bad gas? Water in the tank? Although regular 87 fuel should have a 5 or 10% ethanol mix which should take care of the water. Was the high octane gas from a "Top Tier" gas station? Although I have heard...

    96 Tahoe Random Misfire P0300

Look for the easy fixes first, don't get distracted by what your Dash Commander is saying. Yes, it has some valuable information, look for simple fixes first. The computer is likely adjusting timing in response to the misfiring. Misfiring could simply be due to condensation inside the spark...

Bad lifter in my 2007 GMC Yukon XL2500.

In diagnosing these other possibilities, a mechanic's stethoscope really helps here. You can touch it to all the suspect areas to get an idea of what is making noise.

    96 Tahoe Random Misfire P0300

When you do, put a good coating of silicone dielectric grease on the boots for the plugs and coil. Do you have any lean codes? Can you put a scan tool to see whether the left or right bank is primarily affected? For me this was one clue that the air intake gasket had failed. As things warm...

2003 Tahoe Steering Wheel Upside Down after Steering Gearbox Replaced

I know this sounds weird, but is it possible you got things back together the the Pittman arm on backwards? I'm not so sure it's possible, but it would certainly explain why your steering wheel is out 180°.

Coolant leak on top of engine

The rear ones might not be connected to coolant lines, and may be just plugs. They would be in the same relative positions on the rear, so they will be hard to see.

    Rear differential and Fel-Pro gasket

I wonder! Is it possible some one overtorqued the cover bolts? If this is truely the case, I might be best off either getting a new cover, or just using a bead of RTV only. This seems to be the most reliable solution, if done properly. I'm now leaning more towards just using RTV. I...

2002 fuel trims loss of power after 2 hours

Leaking intake manifold gaskets are so common on these years I wouldn't rule that out just yet. It's also an easy and cheap fix.

Did my first oil change ever on my Tahoe. It was messy.

I like the bag trick. I use gloves so oil on my hands isn't an issue, but the oil drip onto the crossmember and makes a mess that way. As for draining the oil from the plug, I have a small pan and hold it close to the plug when removing the plug, then set it down as it drains. The only...

    03 GMC Yukon P0300 misfire 5.3

When I first got my '02 (used), I also had a random misfire. It turned out to be the intake manifold seal. This is very common in the 02-06, and perhaps beyond. The seals get compressed and let in a ton of unmetered air, cuasing misfires. It was rather tough to diagnose it because you'd...

    Rear differential and Fel-Pro gasket

The bolts probably didn't actually loosen. Probably the gasket compressed slightly, thus requiring to be re-torqued. The second time I checked the torque they were right up to 30 ft-lbs. I might consider a new cover then, and try an OEM gasket. That fluid is expensive.

    Rear differential and Fel-Pro gasket

I used the Fel-Pro gasket for my rear differential. I appeared to seal well for a number of months, then started to drip. I retorqued the bolts as they had become slightly loose (maybe down to 25 ft-lbs, torqued back up to 30 ft-lbs). That seemed to stop the leak for a couple of weeks, and...

2021-2024 LED Tahoe Tail Light upgrade

I find many of the LED lights too bright as well, whether they be brake, blinker, or headlights. I don't flash my lights at them because I know they have no control over them.

2021-2024 LED Tahoe Tail Light upgrade

I'm actually glad that they are still using incandescent bulbs. If these new LED housings get damaged in any way that is not covered by insurance or warrantee, they can cost thousands to replace. Imagine you have a 10 year old truck with one of these housings and the plastic develops a...

What rear hatch glass will fit a 2002 Yukon XL?

Just so you know, when I switched my hatch glass to the 2006 style, pressing the release button no longer popped the hatch out. I also heard a whistling sound if I used the HVAC blower on full because the latch wasn't holding the glass tight enough against the seal. I added a 1/16" fender...

Towing up Mountain Pass - 210F Engine and 199F Transmission

210 to 212 for engine temps is nothing. That's not even the boiling point of water, and is probably in the normal operating range. My '02 was going above that towing up the Coquihalla. I had to turn the heat on, AC off, and open the windows to keep temps under control. Conversely, our 08...

    Left Mirror

Pulling a trailer from BC to CA and through LA taught me a lot about being aware and scanning. When pulling trailer, you don't have the same stopping distance or maneuverability. I wished I had saved a dash cam video of a semi driver that must have been falling asleep going up the Grapevine...

    Left Mirror

#1. My mirrors are adjusted so that the sides of my vehicle just disappear from view. This way, a vehicle coming up from behind will move from the rear view mirror to your side view mirror. By the time the vehicle passes out of view in the side mirror, it will be visible out my side window...

Intermediate Shaft / Steering Column Bearing Replacement - 2004 Tahoe

I just did the intermediate shaft last night. I have a neat trick to help guide the shaft back through the firewall. The angle is quite steep and it can be tricky to get it poked through. I popped a length of Nalgene tubing onto the end of the shaft. (Nalgene is soft and can fairly easily...
