Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Here is the link to the cam I have. https://www.lsxceleration.com/lsxceleration-stage-1-nsr-truck-cam-206-212-515-522-hr110/ Further investigation follow up: It doesn't really feel like a miss. My neighbor (a retired airplane mechanic) thinks it sounds like a vacuum leak. Every video I've...

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

If there are, they're subtle. Like nothing to the point that it feels like it's gonna die. It will rev up a little at times, and it sometimes "catches" when I first accelerate. But it's mostly just a very uncomfortable idle.

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Okay, so at this point, I have no engine codes. At least no pending ones. I have stored ones. The truck drives fine. However, it does not idle fine. Pretty rough idling still. But no codes. Any idea where to look here?

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

My new timing cover did not come with a harness. It was just the cover. I had to transfer over the harness and the harness bracket (which I modified) to make it work.

I did. Loosened everything up, pipes included, and I'm going to replace the gaskets in there. Hoping that re-torqueing the manifold after it's been hot helps out that seal...?

On the non-VVT cam and timing cover, there is nowhere for that plug to go. Not even a dummy plug. So currently it's just tied up with the rest of the harness.

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

It's been raining here so I haven't been able to try the brake cleaner test. That's one I hadn't heard of. As far as the cam, yes it's an aftermarket cam, and I replaced the timing cover to go with it, which doesn't have a spot for the VVT to plug into. So that plug is just tied up there, not...

Definitely torqued the manifold that way. It's even a multiple pass one, starting with 11 ft/lbs and 18 ft/lbs on the second pass. At least that's what my printout says. And the pipe nuts at the flange were 26 ft/lbs. Scan tool has shown a P219B and P0010. Double checked the 02 sensor on the...

Exhaust leaks... So I found exhaust leaks at both flanges and at holes 5 and 7 on the manifold. I am very positive that I torqued these to proper specs. Is there an order you're supposed to tighten these (not on the manifold itself), but between the flanges and the manifold. Like, does...

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

No it's definitely been tuned to turn off AFM. My guy with the EFI Live tuner did not see any place where VVT is mentioned. He did say he thinks they call it camphasing, which he did disable. That's where we got with the tuning.

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Well, here we are... reassembled. A few things: 1. It's idling like total dogcrap. Is there something in the tuning that turns off the VVT, or does that happen when you change the timing cover that's non-VVT and tune it to delete the AFM? Throwing a P0010 code. There was no place for the plug to...

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Okay non-AFM valley covers... When I bought my kit, I didn't really understand what all I was buying, and now in hindsight, I see that the shop I bought from was out of stock on the covers. All I'm finding in stock are weird Amazon stores or verrry expensive stores. Anyone have a recommendation...

I did a quick google on this because I felt like I’d read it before, and my God, I didn’t realize the depth of the debate. Antiseize on Acdelco OEM spark plugs or no?

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Well I ended up borrowing a heavy duty torque wrench and flywheel tool from a friend, so that worked out. But 240 ft/lbs... I'll be honest.... I turned as hard as I could and I couldn't make that thing click. :Big Laugh: So we're just gonna say it was on there tight. I wish I would've bought the...

Next question.... how do you hold the harmonic balancer still in order to torque the crankshaft? And 240 ft/lbs on the first pass? I'm gonna have to borrow a heavier duty torque wrench.

It was that bolt circled that I had a whale of a time getting to. Just had to do it by feel, once I eventually got an small wrench on it. Not one of my swivels would get in there.

Do any of y'all remember how you were able to torque the bottom left front-facing bolt on the timing cover? I can barely even get a tiny wrench on it, much less anything to put some actual torque on it.

It didn’t seem to have any cracks in it, but was very flat and left some red rubber on the lift tube where it was seated. Had to spend some time cleaning that off.

Do you guys know if local stores sell the red pickup tube o-ring? My pump came with two black o-rings... am I supposed to stack those?

Jesus I almost wish you wouldn't have said all this. :Big Laugh: :sad72: I'm already waayyyy too deep now.

Yep. Deleting the VVT, too. I decided to go ahead and replace everything, so 3-bolt cam, new sprocket, new chain damper.

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Well, now you have me second guessing some things. I'm replacing mine with a stock 5.3 cam, so I wasn't moving to the 3-bolt. Because I planned on using a stock cam, I didn't buy the different dampener. I also did not buy a new oil pump, but now you got me thinking I should have.

Is This Camshaft Reusable? Or Too Pitted?

Well, the cam is out. I'm not sure if it looks all that bad or not. The "pitting" certainly seemed to look worse on my phone when I made those videos earlier. With my bare eyes, it doesn't look all that terrible (and I don't need readers... yet :Big Laugh:). So maybe I created a whole bunch of...
