For me it would depend on what is the cost in dollars or disappointment if it trashed your hunting trip. Is there a plan B like a rental feasible?
I don’t think the six speeds are prone to failure without warning.
And my final thought for interstate travel and warranty consideration I wouldn’t...
I just poke a hole in the rubber between the OEM wire bundle and the edge using an awl or some similar. You want a tight round puncture, NOT a slit that will tear and spread. Feed the new stuff through the puncture.
Because I’m into overkill I usually apply some silicone caulk to both sides of...
I’d start with a fuel pressure leakdown test to see if there’s a fuel injector stuck open.
And I wouldn’t spend any more money on it before a compression test. You don’t want to spend a bunch on peripherals just to discover it needs a teardown or replacement.
I have a set in south FL if someone wants them. But it would be delayed gratification because I won’t be back there for a few months to get anything done.
And they were painted black by someone prior to me.
So…. today I bought a new starter. Went to install it and the first thing I found was a loose cable on the starter. Really loose, like 2-3 turns on the nut. SMH. Tightened it up, can’t tell any difference in cranking speed.
This makes me think it’s not original. Also there’s no heat shield on...
Certainly possible, although I didn’t direct any water right at it. Consensus seems to be blame the starter at this age, so I’ll go ahead and replace it today before getting dirty again. As long as I have a good starter, I can always force it to crank.
Probably time to take a day off from...
Tonight’s latest development was a click-no-crank after hitting the car wash. I did not clean under the hood, but I did work ******* the wheel wells to dislodge a bunch of hard clay.
I could hear a loud click at each attempt, but no crank. Raised the hood to let it dry and spent a few minutes...
Forgot to mention some other maintenance yesterday; air filters.
The engine air filter was not very dirty, despite months of dirt road operation. I was concerned that the alterations to the front would let more dust into the front fender where it draws air, but that doesn’t seem to be the case...
A little maintenance today: replaced a faulty wheel speed sensor LR. Forecast is for rain so I might need traction control if the dust turns to mud around here.
Also cleaned out the vent caps for differentials and the fuel tank vent valve. These are poorly placed and will accumulate mud and...
Just to follow up on this I did finally get a chance to change the wheel sensor and that’s all it was. No rust problems on this lifelong Texas truck. Over a couple of weeks it went from occasionally to “almost every time” presenting the problem.
One thing I took as an indicator of a bad sensor...
Probably to keep a leaking seal contained so you’d not know it was there.
When I had my transmission replaced it subsequently leaked at exactly that spot. Which, to give credit to the dealer doing the installation, they immediately noticed. The transfer case needed a new front seal.
Dry in the sense there should be no ATF in that space. The transmission output shaft seal keeps trans fluid out of that space. The transfer case input shaft seal keeps transfer case fluid out. So the cavity should be dry inside.
I don’t think it matters whether you use sealant on that gasket or...
Read the warranty carefully before you put down money. Most reman sources have a lot of restrictions on your rights/ their obligations. In my opinion but the GM warranty is much better.
Not too bad, but it varies with the age and condition of the glue on the double sided tape. Some of my badges came of easy, but some of the glue was hardened and resistant.
Monofilament fishing line, solvents, and maybe a heat gun.
Of course on an older vehicle you may find bright shiny paint...
Bought new engine air and cabin air filters today. Which I’ll install once the sun gets low in the west. They’re not very old, but it’s been a steady diet of smoke, dirt, and dust this summer. And more than a little dog hair.
We have wandered over into UT. Spent some time today exploring a slot canyon. This landscape makes me feel small.
The Hoe is turning out to be a decent rock crawler for a big fat girl. Traversed some relatively gnarly stuff today with minimal difficulty because the approach, break over, and...
