I was just gonna give them a few strokes, lol. I saw it while ordering the cylinder home, and figured it couldn't hurt to put a fresh crosshatch on them. I've never rebuilt anything, so I very well could mess it up. I'm trying really hard not to though...
About a half gallon of the super heavy duty degreaser from harbor freight, a scoop of tide ultra oxi, and a splash of this purple shit from my buddy's work.
When I did some rocker arms I scrubbed them with diesel/psc1000, then put them in a Tupperware and squirted dawn on them and ran hot water...
I gotta clean the other head a little more, and clean and lap 8 valves, and clean and press put at least 8 rockers too, lol. I might wait till tomorrow, I'm trying to clean up all the bolts and organize them better now
I can't even imagine trying to put these needle bearings back together,
I found some questionable spots while sanding the inner part of the rocker arms. Had to use three from the extra parts, so I basically got my 50 bucks worth out of them already. Wish I would have found it before I cleaned...
This worked perfectly. My bench vise is some antique homemade thing, it barely pressed the bushings into my shocks. I will get a pic of it if I remember. It just presses against my workbench, lol
@iamdub
No these are the heads that came on the used engine from the junkyard, 294k, pressure tested at the machine shop. I only got those other heads because I thought I was getting an updated valve cover. Lol
I gave up on cleaning these rockers and putting the trunions back in.
I think I did it boys!
@Scottydoggs I used the suction cup on my drill, Idk if I went too far, or not enough, or just right. I guess we will see.
@Rocket Man I've lost a good amount of shit due to drugs and alcohol also, nothing that bad ass though.
I was just lapping these valves in now. I'm a complete noob, and did a little research on porting and decided against it. Mainly because I thought these were designed more for torque, and I didnt wanna mess anything up.
This lap look alright? I also had found conflicting info on valve lapping...
Unless I'm blind neither set I have are castech. I am willing to bet the 706 heads in the truck are, because I've seen a little moisture on the inside of the oil cap. Idk if that indicates castech problems for sure though.
I will take some pics of the heads here in a minute
I can live with this.
Forgot about the oil pan though, so I just put it in. Hopefully it doesn't take all night.
Oh, and these are the updated valve covers right? I picked them up for 50, came with a set of 862 heads, rocker arms and 15 pushrods lol.
Dang wind is killing me. Got this baffle pretty clean though. Took it to the diesel/psc100 tank afterwards to stop the flash rust. This crankshaft gets heavy trying to scrub it. Thinking about tossing it in a trash bag and going to the car wash
Built a hillbilly hot tank for this crankshaft. It's windy AF, so I raised the Smokey Joe up closer. If I get the gap at the top right I should be able to load it with coal and regulate the temp with the bottom damper. Its only at 115° right now though.
Cam came! Couple runs, little bleed through, but the paint looks good enough for me.
@Tonyrodz I better order a sensor and thermostat, I was gonna run my old ones but I'm scared now.
I thought about that, was thinking Chevy orange would show leaks well, but I will have to paint the calipers too then, lol. Figured red should be easy enough to see leaks on.
My wife checked her email last night and these were just sitting in the mailbox!
