I'd pull the gauge cluster out and zero out the needle. Probably take less than a half hour including the required beer break.

Just re-read OP... Sorry, still hungover. Check the connection of the signal wire...
Colin - I looked for the 200 amp alt and can't find it. Can you tell me the year, make, and model? I should be running a 145, but the PO was a cheapie and put a 105 in it. If it mounted up without fabbing a new bracket, I'd definitely go that route.
