I would call my 2011 Tahoe Lt an overland build and I love it. It has a lot more room inside than a Toyota and not that much bigger outside. It is not a serious rock crawler but, neither is the Toyota.
Most of the overlanders I do trips with are not out rock crawling because their intentions...
I have never used my winch to get un-stuck I have helped other people with it. Truth be told most of the time you need to get pulled backwards to get out of a bad situation so, a winch on the front of your rig doesn't help all the time. You can certainly get stuck even with a winch..
There is...
Of course the speedo is corrected and I do actually get 16 to 19 mpg... At least by figuring it the old fashioned way by miles to actual gallons of gas used...
Welcome. I love mine off road. I just got back from the mountains in Colorado even at 10,776 it was running great. I have run mine in snow mud desert and mountains in California, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada. Never been stuck so far and it has never left me stranded.
I made it back today and the Tahoe is still doing fine. I was pretty impressed with the MPG avg for the whole trip was 16.8 and I drove it to 10,776 feet.
I drove it a few times now and it's not getting hot... I ll be in the high country hunting elk for the next 8 days so I guess it will wait until I get back to civilization.
Well the last 30 minutes of my trip the temp started to rise it hit 230 and stayed there it was mostly rolling hills at 50 mph. It was shifting and sounding normal it was just hotter than I expected. Earlier in my trip pulling monster grades at 80 mph it barley barely got that hot and cooled...
Well the rear end sounds fine now but the transmission hit 230 on some easy hills the last 30 minutes of my trip. Anyone know of a good transmission shop in Colorado Springs?
@Bill 1960 I was OK with the price since they turned it around in 2 days... Originaly it only cost $1800 to do both front and rear gears..
@PNW VietVet They used 410 factory chevy parts.
I checked the fluid it had glitter in it... Dropped it off at Arizona differential last Thursday and picked it up yesterday... They rebuilt it and replaced all the moving parts in there. They put non synthetic oil in it and recommend oil changes every 12 to 15k.
They also said to drive 30 to...
I think those are a good ideas. Check fluid and u joints first then make a determination from there.
The u joints are original 209k all gears, bearings and seals have around 80k on them.
Maybe I am just being paranoid because of several hundred mile (2 lane hwy) sections with no towns or gas...
I was worried about the transmission on my up coming hunting trip but, now I started hearing a growling noise(bearing noise) from the back. You hear it mostly when there is power going to it and when you coast it almost goes away... I am thinking it is from the gear set not a bearing... If...
Just get one of these heavy duty Wilcos.
I built the cooking table for it and added them to the back of the swing out tire mount. When not in use the wooden table slides in then it all folds up. I also added the gas/water basket too.
Good luck with that.. Anyone know what a stock tire and a 35 in the back will do with a limited slip?
If I remember correctly I was once told you can run different size tires up front but, not in the back. They said if the rear goes flat the solution is to swap it with a front tire so both...
@madmanjustice I just did mine in parallel
Here is my post on doing it.. Dual Batteries installation It took about 20 minutes and I have been running it this way for over 3 years now.
@scot_c When I went to 34's my MPG took a pretty good hit. I was getting 18 to 20 and after adding a lift wheels and bumpers it dropped to around 12 MPG. It also had much slower acceleration.
I re-geared mine with 411s and now run 35's it feels faster then stock and I get between 14 to 19...
I have a local guy who was recommended by another shop. He sounds very knowledgeable. He recommends replacing bell housing and billet TC as well as updating other parts. His price is about $3 grand while in there we were going to replace the rear main too.
It looks like I am just going to hold...
I built my own cross bars for mine. I used wing shaped cromoly steel tubing for light weight and strength.
They are mounted directly to the side rails for a very low profile. Photo below: the top black cross member is stock.
I added a third rail to make mine more rigid with my 270 degree...
I will be leaving here with a couple spare days before needing to be there so worst case I could leave it at a shop and rent a car to drive over to meet up with my son in Colorado springs.
OK Here is the set up. I have 209K miles and it has run hot more than a time or two I live in Aridzona. It has been working fine but, I am planning a high mountain elk hunting trip to Colorado next month it will be a 3k round trip...
Remember it has been working fine nothing weird has been...
Mine was built for going off road but, retaining good street manners...
I avoided any lifts over 4 inches because because for fast off road high lifts are not stable... I have a 4 inch lift and King suspension... 75 mph dirt roads / desert roads no problem running on asphalt I have done 110...
