What type of oil to use for Winter

April fools I change over to Valvoline High Mileage 10W-30 semi-syth for the Summer and then sometime in November I change to the same brand 5W-30 for the Winter. I only put maybe 6000 miles a year.

What type of oil to use for Winter

This is a pretty sensational claim seeing how the Platinum is full synthetic. There is however a non-Platinum high mileage which seems more believable.

What type of oil to use for Winter

So basically it all comes down to what we have always been told... The 5W in 5W30 represents the starting viscocity of the oil. The colder your engine is the more need for oil to reach vital engine parts quicker. The 30 weight part represent viscosity at full engine operating temp (approx...

What type of oil to use for Winter

At 165k I now use Quaker State Defy 10w30 High Mileage (semi-synth). I did originally use Mobile1 5w30 full synthetic but it ended up going right by the valve stem seals and piston rings gunking up / carbonizing my valves and top of pistons. As you can imagine it was eating oil quite...

    Wet driver/passenger carpet

Any update on your leak? I have the same issue but water is just on the drivers side carpet. I taped off my sunroof and the carpet is still getting wet.

TORQUE SPECS FOR ENTIRE YUKON IN ONE PUBLICATION?

Torque figures are given at the beginning or ending of a particular section in a service manual. You have a choice of print, cd or online publications. In my case I choose to use Alldatadiy.com. All torque values for my 2005 5.3 liter engine are shown in a list at the beginning of the engine...

    Cracked windshield and Insurance

It is a claim. However windshield claims are comprehensive and normally won't increase your rates. Weather or not you would have to pay a deductible varies depending on your plan. For instance you might have a zero deductible broadform plan that includes free windshield replacement.

Random pull to LEFT OR RIGHT when braking.

Yes. At this point I can pretty much change brakes and rotors blindfolded with one hand behind my back.

Random pull to LEFT OR RIGHT when braking.

No bearing noise or wheel looseness. I have literally no play in the front steering linkage. It's all been rebuilt. But now i have another issue. My brakes are feeling like complete crap. The pads feel like they aren't grabbing enough. Either that or I have lost power in the hydroboost...

    Is This Lifted?

Looks like at least a 2 inch leveling kit but i am not a lifter so couldn't say for sure. Those wheels are big. Regardless if you know anything about lifting or not you can look where the lower suspension arms are bolted to the original frame or not. The rear axle would have longer springs or...

    Strange noise behind dash

The procedure is roughly this: With the engine off and key out pull HVAC A and B fuses for 1 minute. Reinstall fuses and then do a "key ON-engine off" and don't touch anything on the climate controls for a minute. The HVAC actuators are now in the process of calibrating. After that minute has...

    Replace Head gasket

Can someone give an estimate of how many hours it took them to replace a head gasket on a 5.3? This weekend I plan on removing the drivers side head. I want to check it for cracks, replace the intake and exhaust valve seals along with the head gasket and remove a broken off exhaust stud. Thanks!

    steering

You need to isolate it being a linkage or power steering issue. Lift both front wheels off the ground and turn steering wheel lock to lock with engine off. If you feel similar or worse resistance like you pointed out then the problem is in the linkage itself, ball joints, tie rods, etc...not the...

    Strange noise behind dash

I would say that If you have to listen THAT closely and everything seems to be working ok (instrumentation-wise)...then it isnt a problem. However my best guess is that it could be gauge cluster stepper motor noise. The only way to verify that is to remove the cluster and run it again. Is this...

    Back to Autoride School

Short story. A few years ago with 150k on the odo I decided to replace the front factory Delphi Autoride shocks with Monroe Reflex monotubes. I also installed resistors at the time to fool the Autoride. The ride never seemed right and was stiff and bouncy at times. So being fed up I decided to...

Is it my fuel pump or my imagination?

It's possible. But I usually see them crap the bed after about 8-10 years of hard service. It's not unusual for a pump to go out at anytime before that it's just not common. Pump life mainly depends on environmental factors. People that drive in the Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania...

Passenger side dash metallic tapping noise

I took it back to the body shop. They found the front quarter panel cracked in a few places.

To rebuild or to buy new (shocks)

Do you have autoride? If so then you could stay with acdelco oem (pricey) or Arnott equivalent reman'd shocks (less pricey) . Otherwise you could overide the autoride sensors and use Bilstein HD aftermarket shocks which seem to be popular. Sachs also makes a premium aftermarket shock. I have my...

Passenger side dash metallic tapping noise

I've got a noise directly in front of the passenger dash more near the firewall. It sounds like a dangling wire hitting a panel of shear metal. It's quite loud when driving seems to only make noise going over bumps. I have ruled out suspension and wheel brakes as a cause. I put my ear up in that...

Random pull to LEFT OR RIGHT when braking.

What in the world! Now my Tahoe is randomly pulling to the left OR right while braking. Not just to one side. It seems to happen more when braking and turning simultaneously. I have no idea what's going on. Seriously, this can't be a caliper issue? What about alignment? Would caster or camber be...

    10 ply tires on a 1/2 Suburban?

I filled my tires to 75 PSI today and towed our trailer for a few hundred miles. The TPMS never even alarmed when the pressures got to 82 PSI on the DIC. I am thinking there is no upper limit. And if you think abut it..why would there be? TPMS is designed to alert the driver that the tires are low.

Random pull to LEFT OR RIGHT when braking.

I decided to get a $14 caliper piston seal kit. I used to rebuild calipers and exchange pads back in the day so its no biggie for me. It's much cheaper than spending another $60-$90 for a whole caliper. If there is something wrong with the caliper it's going to be the piston seals because there...

Random pull to LEFT OR RIGHT when braking.

I will try replacing the caliper opposite the direction of the pull. Crap I just changed both calipers a year ago.

Random pull to LEFT OR RIGHT when braking.

Has anyone experienced this and how to fix it? Ive started experiencing a strong pull to the left at times when i come to a stop. Happens maybe 10% of the time. I checked the calipers and bled brakes. No visible issues. There have been times in the past where I have noticed constant brake pull...

    Starter problem... maybe???

Assuming the battery is fully charged just tap the starter body while a friend holds the key in the start position. Many times this will get it to unstick and start one last time. Sorta like banging on the gas tank to unstick a fuel pump. Stay away from the electrical connections on the starter...
