When is enough to let go?

Car company's are out pricing themself. People are more app to purchase a used well taken care of with records car. Those cars people are buying up fast. So if you have a high mileage car. But was taken care off inside and out. You can put your price on it and it will sell. I used to be in a...

When is enough to let go?

It is sad day. I gave up on my project. Life was getting in the way. Had to sell my Tahoe. Regretting it. Basically gave it away. But some day I might be able to get another project car. And this time I'll be able to keep it. So enough was enough, Money pit in the end with no value.

01 Tahoe 5.3 tick then goes away

Here is a video of the lifter noise. Disregard the squeaking noise. It is my a/c belt tension. Need to replace it. Link to my video of the noise. https://youtu.be/-RzqfacTwjw

01 Tahoe 5.3 tick then goes away

My Tahoe is a 2001 with a lot of miles. But the trans was rebuilt about 3yrs ago. So at least that part is good to go. I'll try and get a video of the issue tomorrow. If I do the cam I should replace the oil pump. But that involves dropping the oil pan in order to get to the oil pickup tube...

01 Tahoe 5.3 tick then goes away

Yep done that too. One oil change I put Marvel Mystery oil in with the oil. That work for awhile. Then the second oil change (3000 miles) put ATF in. Work the first 3 times of start up. I wonder if regular thicker oil would help. Like 10w30 instead of the 5w30.

01 Tahoe 5.3 tick then goes away

To replace the lifters is a major job. You have to remove the heads to get to them. So that would be a total engine gasket kit, new lifter trays, oil pump etc. More time, lot more money! I can get a cam for $89, timing gasket set for $20 and I am rolling. But all of that would be out the...

01 Tahoe 5.3 tick then goes away

I thought about that too. Have a broken header bolt on on the drivers side. But the sound is coming from the passanager side where the sound is coming from. I even installed the temp repair bracket on the header to seal it. I even seen a spark plug do this where it was arching from the...

01 Tahoe 5.3 tick then goes away

My 5.3 at start runs good. But at start up, after a couple of seconds there is no noise. After about 20 seconds there is what sounds like a lifter tick develop. I let it idle for about a minute it goes away. It doesn't come back after it has ran for a little bit. Could I really have a lifter...

    My Project Tahoe

So the chrome strip molding on the side of the doors is like gone. When the other owner had it painted. They just painted right over them. The paint didn't really stick to good to the chrome. Or it looks like they are weather from over the years. I was going to replace them until I saw how much...

    My Project Tahoe

Thanks for the info. So there goes the budget build...lol I am better off just buying another 5.3. Cheap cam replacement and install the whole motor. At least I won't have a 300k motor anymore. I've source another 5.3 for $300. So find me a strong tree and pull the old one out. Block and...

    My Project Tahoe

I know right...Its just I am trying to figure out the other details of the swap. Like can I use the existing wiring harness. Will I have to get a 6.0 ECM? If so will it plug into my harness. or can my 5.3 be sent out to be program to run. Seems it would be a plug and play kind of thing, but...

    My Project Tahoe

Now the 6.0 is just the engine and trans. A 2016 so would have to do a DOD delete. Not a whole car. So the same price of just a rebuild kit I could get a whole new setup engine and trans. Now grant it my trans was rebuilt about 2years ago with a new torque converter. I could always pull the old...

    My Project Tahoe

Now I am at a cross roads. So I source all my parts needed to do this rebuild. Thinking worst case I'll have to replace the rockers, cam, push rods, lifters, oil pump upgrade to high volume and timing chain/gears, etc. Thought is if your in it, might as well replace what you can now for...

    My Project Tahoe

Thanks @Geotrash, I am starting to rethink my rebuild path after I saw this youtube video about the sloppy mechanic cam kits. Seems the metal is really soft and the lobes are not ramp up right. I am trying to fix this on the cheap side and also have fun with it after it is done. We sold the...

    My Project Tahoe

Oh no, I have the lifter tick. At first thought it was an exhaust leak. When you first start it up you can hear it. Then about a minute later it goes away. Only does it on a cold start. Oil pressure is good. I even tried oil additives to see if that would help. So looking at cam swap, lifters...

When is enough to let go?

I see people taking those K-cars and drag racing them. One dude installed a 6cyl and big turbo that made like 800hp. Was ridiculous amount of power for that car. Would lift the front wheels off the ground. Just goes to show you how crazy the used car market is. Craziest is the truck market...

When is enough to let go?

No freaking way....Those Chevette where rust buckets. My friends Dad had one. Drove it every where. Was not good on gas either. $9k is crazy money. Then I should ask $10k for my almost 300k mile Tahoe.

    My Project Tahoe

Life is getting in the way of this project. I finally went and have the car aligned again. So its straighten out. Steering play is gone and drives great. Easy to steering and don't have the death wobble any more. That steering box was wasted. Just used it to tow a small camper and did really...

When is enough to let go?

I guess it comes down to this. Doesn't matter about KBB value. It's a matter if it works for you and your budget. Your relevance as to how much is it worth to you vs someone else looking at it. Like someone said. If it starts to become a parts chaser might be the time to give it up. Or as we get...

    Max Towing too Stiff

Nice ride. Like the interior. I can tell by the way it is setting the suspension is stuck up. You diffidently have an issue with it. Would have to take it to the dealership to scan for codes. Unless you have a scanner that you can emulate the shocks to see if they can move freely and operate...

    loose steering

That is a lot of work just to get that arm off. I beat on mine for 4 hours. I even tried cutting it like you did. Would not move an inch. I saved a lot of time and effort by replacing the steering box and install a new arm. Was done in about an hour! Drives a whole lot better now. Glad you where...

    loose steering

I would like to know if you get the pitman arm off the steering box. I couldn't get mine off. Tried everything. Ended up getting a new steering box and installed a new pitman arm. Totally rebuilt the whole front end. Good luck. With all that rust. I would go ahead and replace the center link...

    Question About Idler Arm

The pitman arm is attached to the steering box. You won't be able to get it off!! I've tired on two different units and could not get it off without damaging the steering box. A big hammer, heat and proper tool I couldn't get it off. Big pain in the rear. It is a tapered fit arm. The idle arm...

When is enough to let go?

When each of my kids was able to drive. And they wanted a car. I bought them a car from the Salvage yard. Yep a junk yard car. They had to learn how to build it back and get it running. This life lesson teach them how to respect the car that was given to them and how things work. How to fix it...
