    97 tahoe, grinding noise

Well I found out that the torque converter was changed with the transmission. I think Im going to take the front drive shaft out, and drive it, and see if the grinding noise, vibration goes away, that way I can see if it is something in the front end, vibrating down the shaft.

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

So while driving home on the interstate, I let off the gas and it began its usual grinding between 70 and 60 mph. I put it into 3rd and it went away. Does this mean the torque converter?

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

THANKS! I am at work until 2. I will try it on the way home, and see. The more I read, this may be the torque converter. It also at around 80MPH, if you barly press the gas, sometimes there is a quick skip, almost like a missfire. However ive noticed anything over 75 MPH, if you let off the...

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

95wintt, No I don't believe so. It was a complete swap. There was a rebuilt transmission in a 97 extended cab truck. They took the tranny and t-case out of that and put it mine. I may be miss understanding something, but is the torque converter part of the tranny?

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

That could be. I know body work has been done to it at one point, and it has been painted.

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

Agreed. I have had the rear end opened up to do the axle seals, all looked good. I agree it has to be something with the front, and vibrating the front axle? I don't understand why it woud go away the minute it is put into neatral, and your coasting?

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

I forgot to mention, the old tranny that was in it had a hair line crack in the case, just in front of the pan, which obviosly leaked bad and I believe burn out the tranny over time. Im thinking what ever this grinding vibration is, may have been what caused the crack before. I would like to...

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

Good thought. The tranny and T-case were taken out of another 97 truck. So its a completely different tranny and t-case. The noise has not changed from the old tranny and t-case to the new one.

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

I dont know if the grinding noise goes away when in 4x4, because I dont drive 60 to 75 MPH in 4x4. All I was saying was it goes into 4x4 fine. I dont know if the shift motor was replaced.

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

I dont know if the front drive shaft is spinning while in drive or not. I don't think it is wheel bearings, due to the fact it goes away if put in neutral. I don't believe it is trans or t-case, because it has a completely different trans and t-case then before, and nothing has changed, as far...

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

It is push button 4x4, not on the floor. I thought wheel bearing as well but as already stated, that would be constant, and not go away when put in neatral. It is consistent with vehicle speed, not engine speed. ---------- Post added at 09:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:19 PM...

    97 tahoe, grinding noise

I have a 97 two door tahoe, 5.7L, 4x4, 149000 miles. From the day I got it, It has a grinding noise at interstate speed, in between letting off the gas and pressing the gas. It is still there when letting off the gas, but not as loud as when in between on and off gas. Heres the list of things...

    97 tahoe knock

So does that mean time for a new motor? I also a few months ago did the seafoam treatment through the brake boost. I did change the oil after that as well.

    97 tahoe knock

I will try a different oil. I dont know if that would be the case, but worth a try. I used to have a 92 suburban with 145000 on it, never lost any oil in between oil changes, and I always ran the high mileage oil summer and winter, and never had this knocking sound on start up when cold.

    97 tahoe knock

I have been using the napa gold filter. The oil pressure on start up hasnt changed either, it is always in between high and the middle which I believe is 40, and then after being driven and warm it settles to 40, or just below it. This has just started to happen since its gotten cold outside.

    97 tahoe knock

I have a 97 tahoe, with the 5.7, 4x4, two door. It has 148000 and has been great. Ive done alot, however only thing to the motor was new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air and fuel filter. My question is, recently with the colder temps, 40's, when I start it cold, there is what sounds like a deep...

    97 tahoe LT

Thanks for the response. Im going to spray it down with engine degreaser tomorrow, and hose it off. Then add tranny fluid and a bottle of Lucas tranny additive, and attempt to see where its leaking. Someone told be the transfer cases are known to crack on these, near the top of the case. Is...

    97 tahoe LT

Im knew to the forum. I just bought a 97 2 dr. tahoe LT, 4X4, 5.7 liter, with 145000 on it. Its extremely clean, and my sister in law owned it. My question is under the tahoe, where the tranmission pan, and tranfer case is, is dripping wet with transmission fluid. When cold, the transmission...
