Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

How much time/driving was there between you removing the Range and your AFM kicking back in? And how do they do smog where you live? (Here in NC it's all OBD2 scanning, no actual engine revving like in MD) Somehow I never heard of that cheap way. Had I known about it before, I would have...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Still have a slight vacuum leak on the intake side... I think I have to tighten down the manifold. Beyond that, I've had no problems. I still have to replace the wire conduit in a few places, but that's about it. Oh, and I have a Range disabler on the way to hold me over while I decide...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

It sounded much better once I cleared the codes, and it sounded almost normal when I took it for a few drives. Well, except for the vacuum leak, which I think is related to the intake system. I'll sort that out soon.

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Another big update... So I finally got almost everything else done: - new spark plugs and wires (pro tip: if you have the intake manifold off, plug #8 is a piece of cake :Big Laugh:) - new valve cover gaskets and grommets - reinstalled intake manifold - reconnected everything else And the...

Good advice. Sounds like you were one of the unfortunate ones...

    Ticking Sound

My first guess would be a stuck lifter since I've been chasing down the same sound recently (and that's exactly what it was). Like others have said, if you can eliminate everything else (spark plug/wire/coil, exhaust manifold bolt), the valve cover's gotta come off so that you can search for...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Since the tapping wasn't accompanied by any misfires or stumbles, I'm remaining optimistic that any damage is minimal. Under more generous circumstances I would go about replacing everything, but for now I'm hoping that getting the lifter unstuck will hold me for a while, along with some other...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Quick update: Had to put the Yukon on hold because (1) work was super busy for the past couple of weeks, (2) I've been car shopping to replace my Infiniti, and (3) NC has had a LOT of rain recently. With the help of Youtube and my neighbor's fuel line release tools, I finally got the intake...

See, now I'm jealous of your valvetrain.

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

I hope so too! I planned to get back to it this afternoon, but we had a ton of rain come through which ruined my plans. There are two hammer methods I've seen/heard of. One was to remove the VLOM plate and use a solid metal rod of some sort in the oil passage (I assume?) to unstick the lifter...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Yeah, I noticed I had the updated design after referencing some pictures. I have a few days before the replacement gaskets arrive, so between now and then I'll see about cleaning them up. At the mileage the truck is at, I'm gonna chalk it up mostly to age. I do know (or at least suspect...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

I'll check out the VLOM once I get in there regardless. I think I do have the updated one, after some more reading and comparing. Valve cover pic, as requested, showing not-unexpected coating and varnishing. The passenger gasket looks halfway ok, but the driver-side one is cracked in a few...

Yeah, I prioritized those. Would have been a huge surprise if any of 2, 3, 5, or 8 had gone out.

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Slow and steady updates! So I had some time off today as well as some newfound energy (had been fighting a sinus infection for days), and I decided to go in and see which lifter had let me down. I took off the passenger-side valve cover first (an absolute pain on all fronts), because a few...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Well, the truck isn't going anywhere any time soon, so I'll have a few days to play with it. I think I want to start with checking to see if there's lifter failure or just stuck-ness, and then go from there. I'm also reading up on the VLOM and how that can also cause phantom lifter failures...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

Went to another shop this morning, and unfortunately they can't even get the truck into the bay for another two weeks. The service manager was willing to give me quotes though, partly because he's very familiar with these engines. ~4200 for lifter repair (all 16 lifters, head gaskets and...

Mine must be louder than yours then... you can always hear it. And under the smallest load, you hear a chattering rocker arm as well. Here's a recent video (PSA: don't film and drive, kids):

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

If I have to get into removing heads, I feel like I'd be out of my element. Anything before that should be fair game, if slow and steady. That's all a mechanic's stethoscope costs? I should have had one yesterday...

That's why this whole thing didn't smell right to me, especially once I figured out that the truck was in their service for only a little over an hour...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

I bought the truck at high miles and have performed 2 oil changes in 9k miles of ownership, both times with full synthetic. Service records indicate that the oil was changed regularly before me, but I have no indication of which oil was used. I had a dream of driving the Yukon to the next...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

The service manager said that the tech (who had left for the day) said that the engine was completely empty of oil per the dipstick. I went to check it myself, and the oil level was lower than full but still within the crosshatching on the dipstick. (Full disclosure: yesterday I had tried an...

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

I have to admit I was skeptical, especially since he told me there was no oil in the engine (which would be weird since I changed filters and topped off the oil yesterday). I'm about to stop by there in a few minutes and find out everything they say they found out.

Constant ticking @ top of engine... lifter?

UPDATE: Took the truck to the shop annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd apparently my engine is shot and should be replaced. According to the shop owner, there's bottom-end wear as well besides the valvetrain noises.

The exhaust leak is interesting... I always thought that those came and went depending on the engine temp. My engine makes this same sound from start to off. But I'll look into it, as well as the other stuff. I never had a problem with M1 filters before, but I'll swap it and see what happens...

Also good possibilities, and I can check those out myself without going to the shop.
