Howdy,
My '01 with the 5.3 is throwing the P0420 code, "Cats not performing to standards bank 1" since the 27th. I know the run-down of the code, I know what it affects, I am just wondering your .02 on whether the cats are actually dead at 242K miles, or if maybe my sensor just died? The left cat has been rattling around for the past 5-6 years, and I just put a glasspack on it. The truck has been slowly using coolant for the last 3 or four years now, have to add about an inch's worth of coolant every other month or so. What do you think the issue is, clogged cats, dead sensors? Knowing repairs are in the future for this issue, should I just cut the cats completely and when I get the PCM tuned just ask them to turn off the sensors, or replace with maybe OEM or universal cats? It runs fine, for now at least. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you TYF.
EDIT: I crawled under and started banging on the cats, it seems that the rattle is coming from directly under the sensor that is right after the left cat. So, maybe this means that the sensor is indeed dead, and I can get away with my cats. Still any input is appreciated.
