My Sister owns an 07 Tahoe that she uses to pull her 27ft travel trailer...She annually makes a trek to Albuquerque, NM from Wi with her trailer. 2 years ago she blew the diff on the way there. It was repaired in NM and driven back to Wi only to have it happen again on the return trip home.
Last week she made it about 500 miles from home in the middle of BF Iowa for it to blow the front seal, piss out all the fluid and smoke the diff once again. The Stealer suggested replacing the whole diff with a new one for $3600!!!
What I need to know is....Can we replace the stock 10 bolt diff with a stouter 14 bolt from a suburban or pickup? If so, What else will be needed to make the swap?
I realize that this is not the ideal vehicle for the job, but its paid for and it only pulls the trailer 5-6times a season, most within 150miles. I suspect that due to the tongue weight of the trailer which is causing the ass to squat quite a bit, in turn misaligned the driveshaft/u-joints thus resulting in the front seal to fail and you know the rest.
The truck will be getting either airbags in the rear or timbrens to eliminate the sag and hopefully get another couple of years out of it.
Any input is appreciated
Thanks!
