For a week our driver door switch controls were non-functioning when the door was fully open but worked when the door was partly open or closed. Not there is nothing working, no window, lock, mirror folding, mirror signal or seat heaters. The final blow happened when I wiggled the rubber wire tunnel from the door to the fender.

Sounds like a short, right? But the wires appear to all be wrapped and I don't see any damage on the strapping in the door.

I pulled the switch out and while hooked up I figured the heavy black wire on the primary connector (J1) was a ground but I don't get continuity from the wire to any body panels or bolts.

Just groping around with the wires disconnected I did resistance readings between the switch main connector (J1) terminals and was surprised that heavy black wire terminal does not give infinite resistance to all of the other terminals.
The heavy blue and small black wires, when cross to the heavy black give 25K ohms vs the red/white ones that give 10M ohms, so it appears there may be some slight crossover there casting a bit of doubt on it be just a wire issue.
Another confusing part is that testing between the big and small black terminals only gave a small resistance (2 ohms) when the mirror tilting button was left alone. Operating the tilt button gave varying resistances (16K, 21K, 19K, 25K) depending on which direction of toggle was pressed.

Any opinions on whether the switch may be at fault or if I need to be unwrapping the harnesses to check them out?

I would check the wires since every thing starts and stops depending on door position, i would check the wires by the switch if its getting power or not and if it dosent i would work my way back ....
Thats what i would do.

Where would I find a wire schematic to determine which wire brings in the power?
I've got a heavy and a thinner black, a heavy blue, a heavy and thinner red with white.

There's no more symptoms related to door position. All not working now.

Or perhaps information on the connector pin assignments would be helpful.

Grab each bunch of cable and wiggle away. When you find the right bunch then wiggle one by one. You will find it.

You will find a large black wire in the door boot broken, put it back together and it's good to go.

You were absolutely correct. Clean break.
A bit of wire, some solder, heatshrink and tape and we're in business again.
