I wouldn't let a water pump make my decision to toss a vehicle or not. I likely would not take a vehicle in for a water pump R&R to a dealership either just for the reason you ran into. Cost. I did my water pump R&R just this past December in my driveway. Only "special" tool I needed was a large crescent wrench to remove the fan clutch. New water pump with fan clutch (came as one complete kit) was around $275.

Im just north of Terre Haute and their are a bazillion GM dealerships and private shops to choose from if ever needed. There's also wheat, corn and soybean fields everywhere. Heck my local Walmart carries reloading supplies and gun powder in the sporting goods area. Cracks me up when people from northeastern U.S. somehow believe the midwest is nothing but cornfields. Like we are in a different part of the world or something.
Oh no and neither would I but with an ECM replacement 9 months ago repairs costs have my attention. I like my Ol' Hoe but as with others having more money than sense I have a wondering eye. I probably would have traded this year if the new ones were ready for prime time.

Hahahaha The Walmart that has reloading supplies and gun powder is in Clinton. I live about 10mins from Clinton Walmart. I can be in Clinton from my house in about 5 mins.
Small World.

When you said you were just north of Terre Haute, I figured you couldn't be too far from Clinton.
Wife couldn't believe that we would drive 4 hours to buy a vehicle.

The small company I worked for in the late 2000's had the cable television system in Clinton. As I recall, we had a company meeting there and went to dinner at a bar/restaurant. Elroy's, maybe? My boss lived in town, which is why we had the meeting there.

My local chain Firestone shop charges 140/hr which used to be dealership rates. My chevy dealer is at 180/hr now and neither place can find any techs. I just paid 900 for a BCM on my 08 G8.

Ok strait from a mechanic...44000 you dont need a flush.
Assuming the pump was leaking. Having done several theres nothing wrong with the pump itsself..usually a gasket leak at th block. The dealer cant stand behind a repair like that in case the pump does fail in the near future..its a easy job..turn down the flush upsell. Dont pay more than 2.5 labor...Take to a good independent and have them do a pressure test to verify the leak. Pump or gasket failure. They will dump the coolant during the repair..refill with new good to go!

I can't believe your water pump is bad at 44K miles. The last two I've replaced had about 200K, and both turned out to be gasket leaks, not pump seal leaks.

I can't remember the last time I did a flush.

I was surprised also. Last April it was the ECM which I also thought strange. I let them do the flush thinking it possible contaminated coolant might have caused it to go early. I pamper my Hoe and she is not returning the love this year.

Remember that no matter how low "your mileage" may be, that water pump is
at least 10 years old... That coolant turns to shit after 3 years or so... NO Matter the Mileage...
It total bs that the oem's say you can go 100K on coolant (but if you read carefully it will
tell you to change it every 5 years)...
I change all my cars coolants every other year for sure... You'll never get it all out...
And it's cheap compared to a break down, head gasket, heater core, etc etc
