Introduction and MAF help on Tahoe

What a great forum first of all...tons of info here.

I recently aquired a 99 4WD Tahoe with 5700 for super cheap that had an engine problem. To make a long story short my dad and I done a full engine rebuild including crank/pistons/cam/heads/water pump/etc...etc... The problem was a busted piston rod that broke near the #7 piston and did no block damage.

I have always wanted a Tahoe and I am overall in love with the truck but getting frustrated with a small problem. It would miss and hesitate badly for the first week or so after the build so I pulled the tank and cleaned it and replaced filter. It had the fuel pump assembly replaced only a year ago so I feel good about that. I took it to a buddy with a scanner because my $$ is more than shot after purchase and rebuild. It gave us a bad MAF sensor code but right now I cant afford to replace it. It runs good 75% of the time but then on cool mornings going to work I may or may not get hesitation. It never shuts off but just misses. Does anyone here have any reccomendations or advice? I took it apart and cleaned it a few minutes ago to see if that may help. The thing that bugs me is its just so intermidant? It will run perfect and then a few hours later I can go somewhere and its starting to miss again. Is this normal behavior for a MAF going out? Would a used one from a salvage yard be a bad idea?

I welcome any other advice that may save me the $$ right now because Im strapped and want to be sure before I try and put that much in it...Im seeing they are selling here for about 130-150 new. I have also unplugged, replugged and tapped on it while idleing and missing and see no apparent difference in the engine.

Thanks for any and all input.

Josh

Sounds like the MAF is either failing or perhaps there is a short in its wiring. Mounting the sensor to where the airflow enters through the wrong side of it will also cause issues... not sure if that could be the case though.

Welcome to the forum, BTW!
