Hello,
I'm hoping someone call help me out with this mysterious knocking and noise. I have taken my car to a general mechanic twice (1 test drive, 1 diagnostic) and a transmission mechanic twice (test drives), and they were not sure what this is either.
My car feels normal when accelerating. If I am in 4th gear or below (not in Overdrive), decelerating, braking, etc all feels smooth, normal. In fact, even if I'm at 70-75 and I decelerate, I feel no issues until I hit around 60 mph.
Once I get around 60 until 40 mph, however, if am an off the gas, I feel an intermittent series of jerks and rough spots as I decelerate. I can even feel this while braking, if I am braking while in this speed range. When this happens, I can also feel/hear a slight knocking sound each time it hesitates that feels like it may be either under the driver's side by my feet or in the engine in front of it.
The noise does not sound like a metallic ping, but more muffled, almost like the way a rough downshift feels in the transmission. Also, the jerking feeling can range from very subtle to moderate.
Previous internet searching suggested the lockup on the torque converter, but I was told that if the brake is pressed once after letting off the gas, the lockup is disengaged and since the torque converter clutch seems to be working smoothly (according the transmissions mechanic) this is likely not the issue.
I really started noticing this happening after I changed my spark plugs and wires, however there have been no misfires when accelerating and there are no codes thrown. The only thing I can think I might have done is maybe crack something like a hose or seal when I was leaning in to replace the plugs, but I didn't notice anything at the time.
I have had my transmission rebuilt about 1 year ago, as well as a replaced fuel pump.
I'm stumped by this one; have any of you heard of something like this before?
