Hi folks. New owner of a 2001 Tahoe. 196k miles on it. A gift from the mother in law. I have never owned a US truck before and need some guidance. I think the only thing she changed on it was the oil and an occasional flat tire. Brakes are almost gone, steering is a bit wobbly, kills gas and probably a lot needs to be changed underneath the hood and all. Any ideas or suggestions as to what should I take care of first would be greatly appreciated.

First thing I'd do would be the brakes. Full tune up--oil change, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires. I'd also check all fluids, change, top off as necessary. Any engine codes showing? Anything leaking underneath? Address those as needed. Good luck. Great vehicle, now you just need to do maintenance on it.

X2 on this, not sure where you are but check the brake lines for rust, plan on rebuilding the whole front end with those issues/mileage

Thanks. Brakes are first on my list, you are right.
