On friday coming home from work my 2007 Yukon xl truck was driving great and then suddenly I hear this ridiculously loud clanking noise that gets worse upon exceleration. No warning lights come one so I limp home the final two miles.

I check the oil and it shows I am a 1/2 quart from full. I have had excessive oil consumption since about 40k and it has 129k now. My dealership said 1 qt per thousand miles is normal and they wouldn't do anything about it. I spoke to my normal mechanic and he said its ridiculous but that is what GM considers normal.

I go on google and put in a search for what I heard while the truck was running and it seems I may have a bad rod bearing. With what I read it says I would either need a engine rebuild or a new engine. Is this likely?! Part of the reason I bought this truck was because it isn't unusual to have the engine last 250-300k.

Then my next question is I found a local new 2013 5.3 for a GMC Sierra with 8 miles on it for $2500 minus the injectors, valve covers, TB and pan. Will this bolt into my 2007 and if so will I be able to swap these part from my current truck?

Thanks in advance!

My guess is it's a lifter. Bet its a displacement on demand motor. That is most likely the cause of your oil consumption as well. If it was me, I would build a motor without all the DOD crap, get a tune and keep on truckin. Witnessed to many DOD engines have issues my short time working at a gm dealer.

It is a DOD engine. Anyone know if the 2013 5.3 from a sierra will fit?

Have you driven it since?
Has it thrown any codes since that ride? It's odd That it didn't throw a code.
That motor will bolt up. One thing I would before hand is remove, not only delete from your tune but remove completely all of your DOD components.

I haven't even started it since I got home. I am having it towed into my mechanics tomorrow and see what he says.

Thanks for the info about it being a direct bolt on.

It looks like I dodged a bullet! I got a call this morning from my mechanic to pick up my truck.

He said that they changed the oil and gave it an engine flush and it cleared up the issue! Based upon what I had read here and on other forums I was hoping for the best but expecting the worst needing to replace the engine.

If anyone is in the Monmouth county NJ area you need to check out my mechanic ASC Automotive in Atlantic Highlands. Andy is the most honest hardest working mechanic I have met in my life! :)

That's great news, I'm glad everything worked out to your benefit.
It's hard to find honest mechanics nowadays. Keep him tucked away in a safe place haha

and the problem was what?

He flushed the engine and changed the oil which got rid of the noise. He didn't pull the engine open.

He said if that didn't work he expected that I had lifter damage. That's all I know. Driving it today. It is quieter and smoother than it has been for at least a year.

I was ready to replace the engine if need be so anything that delays that day I am all good with. :)
