2007 Tahoe Tire Wear

Forgive me if this might have been beaten to death somewhere already but here is another tire question. I have an '07 Tahoe LT 4wd. I bought it with 60,000 miles on it from a dealer. Clean Carfax. When I got it, it had a set of Mastercraft tires on it. I forget the exact series now. They appeared to be new but only lasted me 28,000 miles. I put it down at the time to either they were cheap tires or they hadn't been as new as I thought when I got the vehicle. I had a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2 tires put on at 88,000 miles. Two and a half years later the truck is at 120,000 miles and the tread on these tires is spent too. Just a hair above the wear bars. The tires came with a 70,000 mile tread wear warranty and hopefully the local shop will pro rate them for me. BUT....... Why can I not get decent mileage out of tires with this vehicle? The tires have been rotated every 5-8,000 miles. The alignment is good and the tread on all 4 is evenly worn across them. I've always kept the tire pressures between 35 and 38psi. I don't baby the vehicle but I don't race it either. I tow a 5000 lb boat (total with trailer) to the lake an hour away 5-6 times a year. Nothing crazy or out of the ordinary. I had the original LTX M/S tires on my 97 Silverado and I got 55,000 miles out of them. Put another set on and did the same. If anything, I drove that truck harder. Can't seem to do it with the Tahoe though. Any thoughts????

32,000 miles is actually not that bad....I'd maybe expect a little more....but not much. The shop should prorate those tires so you'll only pay near 50% of the retail cost.

Anything 275/55r20 isn't going to last too terribly long. 35-40k is probably normal, depending on the type/brand of tire. Friend of mine gets 40k out of her ATs on her jeep with the same size tire, her last jeep had a different size tire (narrower and taller, more like an older truck tire) and the same exact tire got her closer to 60k.

I tend to believe mastercraft is on the lower end of tires. At our dealer, we consider those whole sale club tires. Around here that's what tire places like BJ and Costco mainly sell in their stores. That and tiger paw. We never see those tires last too long. They scallop easily and become noisy. Or trucks are very heavy for this type of tire. Just stating personal experiences

Well, it makes me feel better to hear someone say that maybe this is at least close to normal. I forgot to mention, I do have the 20's on the truck. If I had the 18" wheels, would it be any better? I've always had good service from Michelin tires and I've read a bunch of reviews on tire sites that say people get long life from the LTX M/S or M/S2. I had hoped I wouldn't be buying tires again at this point in time. Hope the shop does a pro rate for me. I figured the weight of the vehicle had a lot to do with it, but I never expected to get less than half the warranty life from them.
