Hi All,

I'm sure this post has come up before but I really have some basic questions. My wife likes a 2008 Denali at a local dealer. It has a clean car fax, 2 owners, and 74,000 miles. It's black on black and pretty clean. Comes with a 2 year powertrain warranty and they are asking $24,990. When I looked at it the motor on start up had a slight ticking (lifters maybe or exhaust leak)? It was quiet after about 2 minutes. Seemed to be coming from the drivers side. It wasn't super loud but I'm pretty particular and I noticed it, maybe I was even looking for it. My question is are there any common issues with the 2008 6.2L (I believe its an L92) engine code? I read it has all the hardware for AFM, however the computer does not have the software to use it. Just want something that I can drive a for a while like everyone else, well at least until the loan is paid off before any major problems. Any thoughts, comments are appreciated. Thanks

Interesting.

You like the vehicle well enough to come on here to ask about it. 74k miles on a 2008 is nothing. Literally nothing. And these engines can go for at least 3 times that number of miles easy.

It sounds clean & straight. I can't comment on the lifter noise. But if it's as nice as or nicer than any other at that price level, it's a decent deal and I'd go for it.

It could be one of the manifolds has a leak. I've had similar noises on the Durango I had before my denali and it was an exhaust manifold. The tick could also be a lifter as the AFM system is known for that issue however I wasn't aware that the 6.2 had the AFM system. if it does and the ticking youre hearing is the lifters going bad the AFM system can be shut off through a performance tuner which is very easy and affordable to do. That being said 74,000 on a 2008 is hardly any miles at all. My 2006 had that same amount of miles when I bought it a year and a half ago. The 6.2 motor is virtually bulletproof. I looked at a lot of the 2007-2014 body styles when I bought my 2006 and many of them had 200k+ miles on them and seemed to run well. So these trucks will go for many miles if they are well maintained. The most common issue Denali wise is the air suspension. The rear air shocks will develop leaks over time and the compressor will burn itself out trying to constantly refill the shocks. But if there are not any issues with it Its a great system that gives great ride quality. Especially while towing. My compressor and rear shocks were shot and I replaced everything for right around $700. Which isn't exactly cheap but most ::) dealers will charge minimum 1200 or so the replace everything. So that being said if the air ride does need anything don't freak because there are much cheaper places to get parts for it. And don't let it deter you from buying the denali.

I have an 07 Denali it's called piston slap. It common most of us on here have it. Once it warms up it goes away. Get under the rear and check out you rear air shocks make sure they are not torn. Also check and see if your air compressor turns on (you should hear the compressor come on as soon as you turn on the truck for about five seconds) The compressor is located in the left rear right underneath the gas spout.

That's for all the input. It's not piston slap because my Tahoe has that so I'm familiar with the diesel like knocking. This was more of a light tick that might come from a lifter or exhaust leak.

Yep it would probably be a lifter or exhaust leak.

They actually told me to take it home for the night if I want so that is an option if I want to have a mechanic look it over.

Take them up on it and have the whole truck checked out.

Are the 6.2 prone to that? Will it tick for another 100k or is it going to lead to an engine failure
