I just bought a new 2009 LTZ and the black plastic side mirror housings just look cheap to me. My Tahoe is silver birch metallic. Are the housings painted body color underneath the chrome caps? If so I'd like to remove the caps and put the lower chrome caps on them. Otherwise, has anyone had their mirror housings painted body color? I'm wondering what the cost of that would be as the plastic has a rough texture that would need to be sanded smooth before paint.

The chrome is a cap - here's the GM accessory to change your chrome to silver birch body color. Lower will still be blackj.

Thanks Jeff. It looks like a good low-buck option for me would be to get the body colored cap and some chrome lower add ons. It would still leave the part that bolts to the door black but I can live with the compromise.

How do I remove the original chrome cap? Is it attached with double sided tape?

Thanks again.

No tape - it snaps on. Instructions come with the replacement caps.

I'd leave this one to the professionals -- unless you don't mind busting the caps up and not being able to use it again.

Even with one cap off, and being able to see exactly where the retaining tabs are, it was tough for my body guy to remove (I watched him remove them). He had all of the necessary plastic wedge tools, and still the pieces gave him fits. Only broke off one of the retaining tabs, so he was still pretty successful.

Just wanted to throw out a word of caution that they're not easy to remove.
