The under hood fuse block on the driver side of the engine compartment... there is a small black/red wire circled and taped up laying inbetween the fuse block and the quarterpanel. The wire has a lug connector on the end and is just laying there. Anyone know what it was / is for and why its there???

I believe that wire is only attached for certain towing needs. When connected it would supply power through the harness to charge a battery on a trailer. It has vague references in the owners manual.

Ahhhh... I bought the HD towing package and the integrated brake controller - perhaps I need to read the owners manual???

I JUST located the same wire two days ago, and thought it shouldn't just be coiled up and connected to nothing, but I didn't bother with it further -- until I realized that my stereo didn't sound correct (I have a JL sub box that was not producing any bass, and the whole system was weak). Assuming that wire was a ground, I looped it onto a threaded post coming out of the firewall, and voila, the stereo was back to normal.

Now, to me sure we're talking about the same wire, mine is coming out of the wiring harness from the fire wall toward the fuse box, if I'm not mistaken. It's a mostly red wire with a black stripe on it.

I've since bolted it down under one of the bolts holding the unoccupied battery tray in the driver's side front corner of the engine bay.

Was working in a 2011 Z71 Suburban a few days ago.
There was a red wire (more pinkish, really) with a black stripe and a lug, coiled up, between the fuse block and firewall.
That one went to the trailer connector on the back of the truck.
The other red/black wire, between the fuse block and the front fender, went under the steering column, looped up. I believe it was intended for an aftermarket brake controller.

There are actually two of them underneath your hood. The one you found goes connected to the right post where you take the fuse block cover off along with a 30/40amp J fuse. (long square fuse with a clear top, usually are green color)

Are you saying you grounded the wire there?? Did that work? I didn't think you could get a good ground on that plate
