I have a 2012 Tahoe. Purchased new and always had service at dealer of purchase. I moved to a new state and took it to the local dealer for service. They recommended changing the transfer case oil. When they went to drain the oil they said it was gear oil and not transmission fluid. Since they already drained it they had to replace it. They put in new transmission fluid but said this could cause issues with the transfer case. I'm not knowledgeable in this area. Does this make sense. I'm about to head out on a 1,200 mile drive pulling a jet ski. Any advice?

If it is 4wd 2 speed transfer case then GM / AC Delco Auto-trak II fluid. If not available you can use Dexron III

Our awd and 4wd GMs don't use gear oil in their transfer case.

Put the proper fluid in, drive it for a day or two, drain and refill with fresh fluid. And press on.
