Using amsoil I feel confident taking it to the factory 7500 miles between changes. The oil itself has almost 5k on it and is still very clean and has good viscosity.
Just a comment that I used to follow the same strategy; expensive oil and long intervals. I even did the bypass filter systems.

Later I did the math and decided I would go the route of cheaper oil -but it has to meet spec AKA Dexos here- and change at shorter intervals.

My thinking today is contamination levels rise over time, regardless of the lube in use. Based on used oil analysis.

Does either choice make a significant difference in engine life? Not so far as I can tell.

I didn't look too close but typically PCV's feed in before the throttle body. Is that how it is on these? Not a GM guy so the 5.3 is all new to me. If it feeds in before the throttle body I'm good. The throttle is very very clean.
No actually the PCV breather line goes to the top of the intake manifold. The TB is ahead of it, so the only oil you will get in the TB is if you are pulling it (pumping it) up through the clean air supply which is ahead of the TB. That would be suboptimal.

If I go the catch can route, what brands should I look at that wont break the bank?

I am probably the wrong guy to ask as I bought a Moroso (which might be the most you can spend). :)

I think there is a long catch can thread in this subform where guys post what they did. I think you probably can get one that will work great for like $30. If you can't find the thread, let me know and I will try and find it for you.

What moroso did you get? I would be happy to spend 100 to 150 or so on a quality piece. I was looking at the moroso air/oil separators and they look like a nice unit.

This is the one I got, although it was about $25 cheaper when I got mine. It was literally a 15 minute job. I took the plastic hardline that runs between the PCV and the Manifold out and just added the hoses to each fitting in the proper direction. It has the air/oil separator section with the scrub pad material and works really well. I just put a small plastic cup below it and turn the petcock to empty it, just takes a few seconds.

That is the one I was looking at. Seems like a quality unit. I like the drain petcock. Did you just cut the fittings off the hard line and hose clamp them onto the supplied rubber line?

I think I just pulled the short rubber ends off the plastic hard line, I don’t think there were any clamps on those hose end bits. I then just used crimp style clamps on all four hose ends. Frankly I don’t think you need any clamps though, the hose goes on pretty snug and there isn’t any movement working in opposite directions.
