Good morning Forum! While reversing out of a grocery store parking lot I noticed a bit of “play” in my shift from park to reverse. Luckily, I was on a few miles from home and made it safely to my residence. Once I got home, I attempted to reverse into my driveway and wasnt able to shift gears from drive to reverse. I cut the engine and restarted the vehicle while still “stuck” in drive and was able to get it in reverse to travel up my driveway, once there I was unable to shift into any other gear and the shifter was freely moving while my foot was on the brake. I threw on my e-brake and cut the engine, when I tried to restart the vehicle didnt turn over, now my Tahoe is stuck in reverse with the emergency brake. I need some help on this issue, hoping it’s not a transmission issue.

Sounds like you're going to need a tow to the dealer...

It's probably just some sensor or switch in the steering column that tells the computer which gear you are in but I've not gone into there yet.

Check the shift linkages, particularly the end where the cable connects to the gear shifter arm on the side of the transmission. If it came disconnected there, you can manually move that arm all the way one direction (forward or back) and that will either be Park or Manual. Finding Park will let you start it, moving it one click from there will be Reverse, then Neutral, etc. Just don't switch the gears without someone holding the brake. The cable may have come off on the column side, but it's the same principle.

You should also report this as a safety defect at safercar.gov. If the Federal Government receives enough complaints, it may trigger an investigation and a safety recall.

Yeah, that'll get as far as the defective airbag modules and shattered dashes of the GMT900. I mean, it IS "Government Motors", right?

sounds like a linkage problem since you said you felt play.
