As many others have posted, my OnStar seems to have died a slow death. We were slowly losing functions (Compass, GPS, Hotspot, buttons inoperable) Those functions have been gone for a couple weeks now. The issue is I think this is triggering an intermittent CEL (Check Engine Light) with the U1962 code. The CEL will stay on for 1 drive cycle about every 5 cycles.

I have 40k miles so no bumper to bumper coverage. Unlike others I decided I really don't care and if I picture the next 5 years of ownership I was never really going to use any of the functions (No speed limit is probably the only downside) Any one have any ideas on how I can stop this from triggering a CEL?

This is a real wild card I am tossing out here, go get your battery tested and possibly replaced. It is due and these newer vehicles with so many computer modules need a good strong battery to function properly.

Do some research on the U1962 code online.

Some examples

U1962 code

Additional P1962 Info

After seeing this post I did confirm I had low voltage on the battery after the car sat for 8 hours (11.9 volts). I am going on assumption, but I did test the OnStar fuse which in my vehicle corresponded with interior fuse F12 which is a micro 3 fuse. Through process of elimination I found that OnStar is the top leg of that fuse. In the case of OnStar I would assume the module is always going to draw variable amounts of power to support the MyGMC app function so testing for parasitic drain is not applicable. It was drawing about .25 amps. (I don't remember the mV value)

I could have done additional troubleshooting but that was not my goal. I know that the OnStar module is inoperable and has been for a couple of weeks. Since I am seeing a broken module draw any power on or off I am concerned. I proceeded to clip the top leg of the fuse to disable to unit. The following day they battery was at 12.5 volts after 8 hours. I am going to continue to monitor for about a week for check engine lights and battery drains. If this is successful I will provide more details my process to disable it incase it is useful to others as I have not seen much about removing the OnStar fuse.

0.25A is 250 mA. That's a lot for a vehicle that should be asleep, but maybe you caught it at a time when a module was awake by design. But if that's a typical steady draw, then it's too much.

The 1998-2006 models that had OnStar had problems with the modules sometimes not shutting down after they were interrogated by OnStar. I removed the fuse on my 2005 about 14 years ago and the problems I was having with a low battery stopped.

11.9 Volt would borderline start the engine and it would cause all the modules to likely go stupid and have a had time communicating. I would have the battery tested and possibly flag it for replacement. These vehicles need strong batteries.
