22" vs 24" wheels/tires?

Can anyone chime in on the difference with ride and tire longevity between both sizes? From looking around seems like about $450-$600 difference in tires between the two sizes plus whatever the difference in wheel cost is. I like how the 24's look better as they fill in the huge wheel wells more, but wondering what the cutoff point is in size to not be paranoid with bumps/potholes and ride quality as this is my wife DD..........
