This is the result of me taking a few measurements and answering my own question about the largest tire we could stick on the stock wheels with no lift. When I bought the truck, the dealership had gone the cheap route and only replaced two of the tires. The problem was that the truck had Firestone Destination LE's on it before, which have been discontinued. Rather than replacing all four tires so they'd match, they just stuck a pair of the new Destination LE2's on the rear axle. Firestone's aren't my cup of tea anyway so I opted to replace them all and get them matching again.
Heres the before pic, with the mix-n-match Firestone's (stock size, 265-70-17):
And with the 285-70-17 Nittos installed:
Not the best pics but you get the idea. The manager at Discount Tire was certain they'd rub like crazy, but I was a little more confident. As I thought, no rubbing and the extra inch or so of total height looks great. I also had them put the wheel weights on the inner barrel of the wheel so the face is clean - wheels will be black soon. I was going to leave it stock, but since the Rough Country 2" leveling kit is only $65, it's on the way too.
