Twice this week as I was driving the DIC has said service 4wd and no lights were lit up on the selector buttons, it would not switch into 4wd but kept driving in 2wd. Both times when I turned the engine off and then went to start and drive again all was fine, the 2wd light was on and it would shift into 4 lo and hi.
Fast forward to today and while driving to town the DIC said service 4wd and the only light that is on on the buttons is a red light at the nuetral selection. Shutting off vehicle and restarting is not making things go back to normal. It is working in 2wd even with red N light on but will not switch to 4wd.
Any ideas on what is going wrong?
Any help is appreciated.

So here is an update.

Truck sat for a couple hours and I had to run back to town. When I left everything was working fine, yellow light on 2wd and it would switch to 4wd. On the way home the DIC said service 4wd but this time it was like earlier in the week, yellow light was still on in the 2wd button but it would not switch to 4wd. Any ideas?

I miss the manual 4wd shifter, didnt have these computer problems! :)

I'm a newb but maybe you could start off by checking the connections behind the 4wd switches.

It's either the switch or the encoder motor. Hopefully it's the switch because it's only $40 where the encoder motor is more like $300. Mine was the encoder when it happened to me.

A small search went a long ways, I will change the switch and see what happens.
