2003 Tahoe Z71. I bought used about 3 weeks ago. This has happened about five times now. While driving, the 4x4 light on the push button panel will be on the red neutral. It does still drive, although sluggish a bit. I have to pull over, and go through the process of getting the transfer case out of neutral. (Car off, emergency brake on, key in run position, trany in neutral, push 2Hi button, trany back to park, start truck). Any ideas?

Thanks

Start with fluid change and go from there. Unless you know its been done recently with the auto-trac II. I know old fluid or the wrong fluid can cause issues with these.

Just had transmission rebuilt and still does it. Was wondering if it was in the electronics.

Transfer case fluid is separate from transmission fluid. It has drain and fill plugs on the rear. The fluid is blue. It has an electric shift motor as well that it could be.

That fluid was also replaced with new seals. I will check the electronics next.

Thanks for the reply. Was wondering if this has been an issue before.

Replace the encoder/actuator on the transfer case. This is the most common cause of this kind of problem. When you replace it, check for corrosion/evidence of water in the electrical connector. Light amount of grease on the rubber seal of the connector when reassembling. It is not cheap, but that is something you need to rule out. Are you showing any codes or check engine light?

This this will be my next step. I replaced the 4x4 selector switch yesterday. Drove about 80 miles since. Hasn't done it again, but not enough time or miles have passed. No codes or engine lights.

If I replace the encoder/actuator, will I have to re-flash the computer?

Thanks.
