trans can run anywhere from $200 for a used to $1,500+ for a quality rebuild. Everything else is nickel and dime stuff, but it does add up. If it suites your needs and you'll be happy, why not. Or you can flip a coin, I've done that before....more than once!

Or you can buy it for a spare parts vehicle

Worst case scenario easily turn a profit on that $500 and/or use it for parts

I would use it as a donor. Get it then get one needing parts with good body. Sell what you don't need

I just bought a 97 with 195K on it for $400 with out tranny. Need the rear, brake module, and a bunch of other little stuff. Good body and doors though. May part the rest of it out. Trying to get the guy to shoot me a pic of the rpo codes now. You can never have too many spares if you are going to keep one of these OBS trucks on the road. Engine on this one runs but it has a knock. Might just drop my spare crank kit into it and flip it too.

I rebuilt my trany and its a lot easier than rebuilding a motor. You will need only one specialty tool. I like these guys because there service is second to none and the money I saved I built mine to a stage two. All the parts and tool ran me around 500 bucks. I took a few months reading up on my transmission and find the weak points and after I got all the parts I dropped the trany at 8am and had her back on the road by 6pm testing everything out. Mine is 4x4 and I do a lot of expedition rides and so far after 4 years of wheeling her I never had a single problem out of my transmission. Get the DVD and it will walk you through on how to rebuild it and give you some good tips as well. If you go that route give a yell and Ill give you a hand with it. Owe you for helping me out with my new alarm :)

Oh where are you located at?? I might need a good excuse for a expedition trip ;)
