Hello I have a 99 Tahoe that has been clunking and almost feels like its trying to lock up. I was told by a shop my transfer case was bad. I changed it and still have the same problem and now my service 4 WD light is on. HELP

More than likely the case is a (NP-243) New Process-243 they are real simple to rebuild this video shows you step by step at 4:00 minutes in he is removing a snap ring on the out put shaft I myself have had several break on me allowing the gear to walk not saying that is what it is but they really are simple cases. the next video shows how the pump slowly eats away at the case itself which can also be fixed easily. Chevy did make many NP models and most are very similar. Hope this helps

More then likely you are wrong. If he has a service 4wd light that is on then it is a np-246 case the 243 was the electric shift version of the 241 and does not have the clutch pack that a 246 does. The first video is lacking the proper info while the second video is relevant to the case Tom has.

Tom have a dealer or a shop equipped with an equivalent scanner scan the t-case module to find out why the light is lit. The light is trying to tell you something is wrong and has a code stored as to point you in the right direction.

Well at first i was told it was my transfer case itself so i changed that then after i put a rebuilt one in my service 4 wd light is on now. I have the np8 tcase. The damn thing is switching in and out of 4wd on its own. Here's what I've done so far. Changed the tcase, the 4wd actuator, and the shift motor and the switch on the dash

Ok the dealership said it was my encoder sensor and the tccm and wants $1750 to fix it. Sounds like a rip off to me

Can you get the error codes they pulled? Sounds as if they have not went for enough with the diagnostic to eliminate one of those as the sure thing.

B2725-Active Transfer Case (ATC) Mode Switch Circuit Malfunction.
C3027-Is an encoder motor error if I am correct?

I would first inspect the wiring harness to the encoder motor.

If you reset the system by pulling underhood fuse #8 for 30 seconds, and put it back, does the TCCM wake up next time you turn the ignition to RUN, and illuminate the 2HI indicator lamp? (Thx roadie.)

Good Luck though, Man!

(Some of the dash mounted switches also have problems with lousy solder joints.)

Ok the dealer told me my tccm is out and my encoder motor was bad. I changed the whole shift motor, took me 8 hours to do a 2 hour job cuz of my broken back. Long story short everything works fine now. No more dash light and shifts in and out of all 4wd gears better than it ever has. Thanks for all the help
