I have a a 99 Tahoe with a fairly new ac Delco compressor. Last time I used it a few months ago it had no issues. I went turn it on yesterday and it wouldn't get cold so I figured it needed freon. Checked under the hood today to make sure it all looked good and i noticed I can't get the compressor to engage. The plug going to the compressor looks good not sure what the problem is.
Any ideas?

went to pick up freon yesterday for it, the guy at the auto parts store told me i need 61 oz. of freon (i have rear ac). that sounded like way to much so i didnt get any.

he told me also to remove the relay and run wires directly from the battery into the compressor to see if it will engage or not.
any thoughts on doing that?

All it will do is tell you the clutch work and one of many other things don't. I would have only added one or two cans to see if the system would boot up. if so then a leak was the issue especially on a compressor that is not run for a few minutes a week. Not running it for several months can cause the shaft seals to dry out and leak. Among other things of course.

yeah add enough to get it started and it may go slow going in. once it starts up add it when the compressor is running. it goes in faster becuase you add it to the suction side which has the lowest pressure point when running.

just added a can and the compressor engaged then disengaged. only engaged for 1 second at a time at first but by the end of the can it was engaged for 5-7 seconds before disengaging. i assume it just needs more freon. back to the store
