I bought a 99 suburban the other day that had a bad a/c. After having an a/c kit put on it at a local shop, my cruise control no longer works, and it is giving me a p1404 (ERG related) code.

Is there any possibilities that this was caused by the mechanic, or is it probably a coincidence?

I haven't talked to the mechanic yet since they were closed when I realized these issues.

What did he do to repair it your A/C system?
And do you have any blown fuses in the cab or under the hood?

Here is info for that error code:

Circuit Description
An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to lower Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emission levels caused by high combustion temperatures. It accomplishes this by feeding small amounts of exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber. When the air/fuel mixture is diluted with the exhaust gases, combustion temperatures are reduced.

A linear EGR valve is used on this system. The linear EGR valve is designed to accurately supply exhaust gases to the engine without the use of intake manifold vacuum. The valve controls exhaust flow going into the intake manifold from the exhaust manifold through an orifice with a Control Module (PCM/VCM) controlled pintle valve. The Control Module commands the EGR by applying a 12 volt duty cycle to the EGR valve. This can be monitored on a scan tool as Desired EGR position.

The Control Module can monitor the pintle position with the EGR pintle position signal. This sensor uses a variable resistor with a 5 volt reference, a signal circuit and a ground. The signal circuit monitors changes in voltage on the variable resistor as the pintle moves.

Conditions for Running the DTC

  • The ECT is between 80-120°C (176-248°F)
  • The IAT is less than 100°C (212°F)
  • The desired EGR position is more than 15 percent
Conditions for Setting the DTC

  • The EGR pintle position is 4 percent or more with the EGR valve commanded closed.
  • The above condition exists for more than 10 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets

  • The Control Module illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) the first time the diagnostic runs and fails.
  • The Control Module will set the DTC and records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The Control Module stores the failure information in the scan tools Freeze Frame and/or the Failure Records.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

  • The Control Module turns OFF the MIL after 3 consecutive drive trips when the test has Run and Passed.
  • A history DTC will clear if no fault conditions have been detected for 40 warm-up cycles (coolant temperature has risen 22°C (40°F) from the start-up coolant temperature and the Engine Coolant Temperature is more than 70°C (158°F) during the same ignition cycle).
  • Use the scan tool Clear Information function.
Diagnostic Aids
This diagnostic will detect an
EGR pintle that does not return to the learned closed position due to foreign material lodged in the pintle seating area, or a defective EGR valve. The VCM will attempt to clear the EGR valve of any foreign material by commanding the EGR valve fully open, although the vehicle must be at cruising speed for this to occur. If the third attempt to clear the valve is unsuccessful, then code P1404 will set.

An intermittent may be caused by any of the following conditions:

  • A poor connection
  • Rubbed through wire insulation
  • A broken wire inside the insulation
Thoroughly check any circuitry that is suspected of causing the intermittent complaint.

They installed a new compressor, accumulator, and orifice tube.

I checked the cruise control fuse and it is good.

I would check for a broken connectors or pulled wires out of them on either the cruise servo and EGR valve. ALso look to make the grounding wires are intact. You will have one or two on the thermostat housing as well as several along the back of either cylinder head.

As I was taking the burb back to the shop this morning, the cruise control worked. So it must be a loose electrical connection somewhere. I had them double check all connections and wires. Everything looked good. They told me basically the same things that were said here. They cleared the check engine light and it hasn't returned. When I cleared the light last night, it came back within a couple of miles driving. I am going to remove the EGR valve and clean it out today just in case.

Cruise control works most of the time. I can get it to work by pressing the button several times. It cut out on the highway once but pressing resume kicked it right back in. So I am thinking it is the switch.

The check engine light did come back on for the EGR. But after cleaning it, the light cleared and hasn't returned.

I guess this was all a coincidence.

maybe. Also cruise control can be kicked offline by a bad brake pedal switch. Keep that in mind if wile going down the road in overdrive without cruise and your vehicle starts shuddering. both are effected by the brake switch.
