So I'm always looking at/for 07-14 Tahoes and Denalis. Recently came across many threads about engine failure in 5.3's due to improper Afm function. I have a couple of questions.

1. Does proper oil type help this issue?

2. Does a tune that disables the afm really solve the issue or are the electronic lifters still troublesome?

3. I know all 2007+ 5.3's have afm. What year did the 6.2 start with it? 2010?

Any other info is welcome.

1. No
2. I've had AFM tuned out for two years and have had no more issues related to the AFM lifters. That's the best I can say from my experiences.
3. I do not know the answer to this but I'm sure someone does

I have an 07 and it does not use any oil. Ive owned with 91.5K miles on it and changed the oil to Pennzoil synthetic shortly after. I now have almost 95K miles on it and its slightly down on the dip stick but not by much. This would be considered completely normal being ive put well over 3K miles on it since changing the oil.

:waytogo: another thing that tuning out AFM did for me was my oil consumption issue completely stopped. That was an unexpected benefit :)

Interesting. So we can assume that the function of the Afm is what burns oil in these scenarios. I consider any oil level drop before say 6000 miles unacceptable. None of my 5.3's, 4.8 or 5.7 burns a drop. Even the 4.8 with 223,000 miles. Sounds like getting a low mileage 07+ and immediately tuning it is key.

I've got 130,000 miles on my '07 Yukon. It does consume a small amount of oil. Is it to late to lock out the AFM or is the damage already done?

AFM & oil consumption is hit-or-miss. Our 2010 Tahoe PPV has AFM enabled, and I've seen no excessive oil consumption. It's daily driver beats on it like it's a step child. So far, so good at about 90K+ miles, so it just depends. It seems that if you have AFM enabled, and oil consumption, disabling it can usually help. Having AFM and not having oil consumption does not necessarily mean it will eventually happen.
