I know there are a ton of threads about the stock crappy sub in the tahoes, but I could spend hours trying to find an answer to a simple question. here goes:

Can I replace the factory sub and run it from a small amp using an LOC? If so, do I have to run power and remote wires all the way up to the front of the truck?

Or would it be easier to make a small box that fits in front of the center console (I have the part of the console with the tape deck and CD storage removed) and mount the amp right there with it?

yes

You would need to run the LOC and remote wire from the front and power from the battery

That's up to you and your wants/needs. An amp and sub box won't both fit in the console. Usually people will put the amp under the back seat.

I have the front portion of the console removed, so the entire area under the dash is free. I was actually considering just a small 6.5 or 8" sub. I listen to mostly rock and metal, and don't need thunderous bass. It's just that my old jimmy had the Bose system, which actually sounded quite good and was very loud. The stock deck in these trucks (with the way the speakers are run from the amp) just sounds plain lousy. I'll have need of the third row seat in a few weeks (kid #3 on the way!) and there just isn't room to put a sub enclosure in the tiny cargo space behind the third row. I figured if I just put a small sub and amp under the dash, it would save me alot of work in running wires all through the truck. Eventually I'm going to bypass the amp (or remove it altogether) and get a new head and door speakers. At that point, I don't really are if there is a sub in the way-back. I just son't want to feel like I'm listening to my music through a tin can anymore!

As far as work goes, it would be much easier to just replace the subwoofer in the factory box provided you have a 99-02. You could however mount a amplifier inside the center console, and make a small subwoofer box for a single 8" downfire and put it where the front portion used to be.
