I recently changed from Castro high mileage oil to Mobil 1. After two Mobil 1 changes I had a ticking valve. I brought my truck to an old mechanic here in town who worked for a Chevy dealer as a mechanic for almost 50 years. He listened to my engine and said, "did you change to synthetic" I told him I did and he said, "you just start using it", he shook his head and said, "listen, I recommend you change your oil and put regular oil in and add a quart of Transmission fluid." He said " trust me" I wasnt going to do it but then talked to my uncle who grew up having this guy work on his cars and he said, if he told me to put molasses in my engine I would do it. Well, I put it in and the ticking is gone. Any ideas or opinions about this? I am not saying synthetic oil is bad, just saying I never had ticking till I used it and this long time chevy mechanic could tell what I had done without me telling him and recommended I go back to regular oil.

Interesting, I don't know....

...but I know that for storing engines for a long period of time, alot of guys in the junk yard business replace the the oil in engines with ATF in case someone may want to buy/restore because it's a good rust inhibitor.

Odd

ATF has a assload of detergents in it.

Switching to syntec, probly loosend some junk that got stuck in the lifter causing it to tick..
Add in the ATf which breaks down 99% of engine oil sludge and vola! tick is gone..

As you stated its old school trick from the glory days, when there wasn't 10,000 types of engine additives.
Just be shure to only run it for alil while. like 200 miles or so then change oil.

Edit,, NEVER use more than a half quart on top of your properly filled engine oil.
When I do this trick, I start with shot glass amounts and add it while the engine is IDLE, till the tick starts to quiet, then stop adding. again no more than 1/2 quart. run engine for a few miles never more than 200! then change oil!
ATF thins oil ALOT, and WILL cause engine wear if used excessivly.

What about kerosene flushes, won't that dissolve a good majority of sludge?

Yup, We have used kerosene, ATF and diesal to clean out engines.

You just better know what your doing.

To mutch and it dissolves the sludge into large chucnks with promptly clogs your oil pump pickup tube, starving engine of oil and BOOM!.

Think of it as a blood thinner.. asprin is weak vs kumadin which will break it loose into chunks.

the loose sludge will clog everything from oil pickup to lifters to pushrods, etc.

Thats why you use small amounts as stated above, start with shot glass amounts. add one shot glass every 5-10 mins at IDLE untill tick starts to quiet. or you see a change in idle and engine noise.. then STOP adding.

Diesal is primarily used if water has made its way into your oil.
Diesal as we allknow absorbs water like a sponge.

drain oil, pull spark plug wires and turn engine over for a few mins to get the diesal up into the system.
Drain it and repeat it a few times. Use some CHEAP! oil to refill engine, reattach wires, run engine for like 10 mins at IDLE.
Drain oil.. if its still milk. use diesal again.. repeat until oil comes out clean. then refill with your choice of oil. and your done.

This is primarily used for guys on ATV's or jeep guys that do alot of water crossings..

Chris, where you at like mileage wise? I get a slight tick sometimes and ive been using synthetic since about 45k and im mid 80k now. Feel like this could be one of those things i could muck up pretty easily, mine could just be the piston wrist pin noise too.

Was this the guy that was hanging out infront of that Andy Griffith gas station i saw???

Thats interesting to know. I had a Cutlass that got flooded in Katrina and I started fixing it back up. The engine was so full of water the oil dipstick was rusty! I wish I would have known about deisel when I flushed that engine. I changed the oil about 6 times with cheap walmart supertech oil and ran it for like 15 mins each time. I kept on changing the oil until it stopped foaming up looking like a milkshake. I did the same with the transmission, but I only changed that once. I unhooked the cooler return line and started the engine and basically "flushed" all the old fluid out of the torque converter and lines and all. It was a lot of trouble, but after a new starter, alternator, battery cables (the battery survived the flood!) and flushing the oil, that engine was purring just as it did before it was flooded. I ended up selling the car though since it ended up having so much rust brewing up everywhere on the frame and everything. Damn I miss that old Cutlass. :emotions122:

Dan, whats going on man? I have 150,000 or just under. As of now I cannot see my milege, my cluster went out so I cannot see my message board or mileage.

Ezdaar, you seem to know your stuff. He did say something about a piece of dirt or carbon that may be sticking and causing the ticking. Didnt know that ATF was loaded with detergents. This board is always really helpful.
