2017 Tahoe Premier - Dreaded "Service Battery Charging System"

https://www.flickr.com/photos/39303975@N05/shares/UY6K4gTy80

This is the first battery or charging system issue we've run into with this vehicle. I had a 2015 Silverado that had a similar problem and the battery swap fixed it. Planning to put a charge on it this evening when I get home from work, but at initial look, does anyone have any thoughts on battery vs alternator?

Thanks

Well, the message says to service the "charging" system, that would be the alternator. That said, if the battery is more than 3-4 years old, replace it as well. Use GM OE for best performance.

get a cheap volt meter and see what the voltage reads at the battery when you first start the engine for the 1st minute or two, should be 13.4v minimum (but more like 14+) the system does that to put a recharge on the battery after the starting load. after a couple minutes it may change depending on the battery temp and load.

I had to jump the Tahoe to get it started. I let it run for a few minutes then took it for a spin around the block and did not have any issues. It’s on a charger now and will try again later to see how it reacts.

I also put an OBDII reader on it and it threw P0004

Battery is original so agree that replacing it is a good starting point.
